Dual Enrollment Program of Eastern Connecticut State University and Quinebaug Valley Community College to be honored with New England Higher Education Excellence Award

Boston-The New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) will honor the Dual Enrollment Program of Eastern Connecticut State University and Quinebaug Valley Community College at its ninth annual New England Higher Education Excellence Awards celebration to be held Friday, March 11, 2011, at the Long Wharf Marriott Hotel in Boston, Mass. More than 500 people will attend this event, including leaders of education, business and government from across the six New England states.
Each year, NEBHE presents Regional Excellence Awards to individuals and organizations that have shown exceptional leadership on behalf of higher education and the advancement of educational opportunity, and State Merit Awards to honor the innovative work of organizations, institutions or individuals in each New England state.
The Dual Enrollment Program is the recipient of the Robert J. McKenna Award for Program Achievement. The program is in its third consecutive year. Partnering with Hartford Public High School and Quinebaug Valley Community College, Eastern co-enrolls each Fall a cohort of 10 Hartford Public High School graduates who have the determination and potential to succeed but who had not planned to attend college. The students take nine credits or remedial instruction at Quinebaug Valley Community College in their first semester, while taking one course at Eastern, living in Eastern's residence halls and fully participating in campus activities. Sixteen of the 19 students who enrolled in the program's first two years are still enrolled at Eastern as sophomores and juniors. The program has received significant financial support from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Wal-Mart Foundation, the U.S. Department of Justice and private donations.
"The dual enrollment program exemplifies the best in collaboration in New England higher education," said NEBHE President and CEO Michael K. Thomas.
NEBHE will also honor Connecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill with its
Connecticut State Merit Award
