BAsics coverRuby Dee; jazz musicians David Murray, Matthew Shippand William Parker; Maluca; Rebel Diaz; poet and playwright reg e. gaines, and other prominent artists, together with people from the community, will come together for an evening of music, poetry, dance, visual art, and readings in an unprecedented celebration of revolution and the vision of a new world.

 

The occasion is the publication of BAsics, from the Talks and Writings of Bob Avakian -- a book of quotes and short essays that speaks powerfully to questions of revolution and human emancipation.

 

Musician Guillermo Brown; singer Maggie Brown; Richard Brown, former member Black Panther Party and co-founder of The Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, founded by the SF8; ; Moist Paula Henderson, baritone sax player and composer; Outernational; Abiodun Oyewole from The Last Poets; Ted Rall, cartoonist and author; Rebel Diaz; and Tapsploitation will also participate. Directed by Leah Bonvissuto.

 

A visual arts exhibition specially curated for the night will include the work of Derrick Adams, Wafaa Bilal, Emory Douglas, Richard Duardo, Skylar Fein, Kyle Goen, Guerilla Girls Broad Band, Steve Lambert, Wangechi Mutu, Dread Scott, SenOne and Hank Willis Thomas.

 

The April 11 Host Committee, in association with Revolution Books, includes Aladdin, actor and playwright; Rafael Angulo, Professor of Social Work, University of Southern California; Paul Von Blum, Senior Lecturer Emeritus, African American Studies and Communication Studies, UCLA *; Herb Boyd, journalist and author; Elaine Brower, National Steering Committee of World Can't Wait* and anti-war military mom; Dr. Robert Keith Collins, anthropologist; The Committee For the Defense of Human Rights, founded by the SF8; Carl Dix, founding member of the Revolutionary Communist Party; Jessica Green, media maker and co-director, Maysles Cinema*; Nicholas Heyward, Sr., father of Nicholas Heyward, Jr. (murdered by the NYPD in 1994); Russ Jennings, theatre producer and writer; Erin Aubry Kaplan, journalist and author; Rev. Bob Avakian is a revolutionary leader and wide-ranging thinker; he is the chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA. He is someone who, in the words of Cornel West, "is a long distance runner in the freedom struggle against imperialism, racism and capitalism."

Aladdin is an actor, comedian and playwright. He is a member of The Public Theater's Emerging Writer's Group

 

Richard Brown is a former member Black Panther Party and co-founder of The Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, founded by the San Francisco 8.

 

Carl Dix is a founding member of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA.  In 1970 Carl was one of the Fort Lewis 6, six GI's who refused orders to go to Vietnam. He served two years in Leavenworth Military Penitentiary for the stand. In 1996, Dix was a co-founder of the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality.  Last year, he was on a campus tour titled, "From Buffalo Soldier to Revolutionary Communist" convincing students not to fight in America's wars.  He recently participated in the second of two major dialogues with Cornel West at Aaron Davis Hall titled, "In the Age of Obama Part 2: Police Terror, Incarceration, No Jobs, Mis-education: What Future for Our Youth?"

 

Nicholas Heyward, Sr., father of Nicholas Heyward, Jr. (murdered by the NYPD in 1994) is a member of the October 22 Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation.

 

Erin Aubry Kaplan is currently a contributing editor to the op-ed section of the Los Angeles Times, and from 2005 to 2007 was a weekly op-ed columnist - the first black weekly op-ed columnist in the paper's history.

 

Matthew Shipp is a composer and pianist born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1960.  He moved to new york in 1984 and has continued to be an influence on the new jazz scene.
