Westland Mayor Calls Regional Water Authority Deal a Positive Step for the Region, Local Communities

Westland, MI - In a deal announced yesterday by leaders of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, and the City of Detroit, the Detroit Water and Sewer Department (DWSD) will be turned into a new regional authority, the Great Lakes Water Authority.

The deal includes a cap on rate increases of 4 percent a year for the next 10 years. The new authority will be governed by six individuals, one from each county, two from Detroit, and the Governor will appoint the sixth person. As part of the deal, Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties would drop their opposition to Detroit's long-term restructuring plan in bankruptcy court.

Before the plan goes into effect, Detroit and at least one county must approve of it by October 10.

"This agreement appears to be a positive step for the region providing stability to communities and a balanced process for setting rates," said Westland Mayor William Wild. "It's important that these investments and improvements are system-wide. Residents from the suburbs, as well as Detroit, should see the benefits of rebuilding the water and sewer system," said Mayor Wild.

DWSD currently services 40 percent of Michigan's population providing water from the Detroit River and Lake Huron.
