RAIL OPERATIONS AND CONTROL CENTER

TAKES SHAPE IN WAIPAHU

Crew members work on a concrete tilt-up wall at the Rail Operations and Control Center.

Significant progress has been made over the past year on HART's Rail Operations and Control Center adjacent to Leeward Community College.

Since construction resumed last year workers moved and graded nearly 250,000 cubic yards of material on the 43-acre site. Structural steel has been erected for the four major buildings: the Operations and Servicing Building, the Maintenance of Way Building, the Train Wash Facility and the Wheel Truing Building.

Underground, workers have laid more than four miles of utility and communications lines.

From the facility, operators will run Honolulu's fully-automated rail system, and workers will clean and maintain the train cars.

Work is expected to be substantially completed by 2016.

The Rail Operations and Control Center will be environmentally-friendly and will meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification.

Come to the Hawaii Seniors' Fair "The Good Life Expo" this weekend and learn about the Honolulu rail transit project.

HART staff will be on hand to answer your questions.  And you can view our informational display boards.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend over the course of the 3-day event at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

"The Good Life Expo" runs today until 4:30 p.m.  Hours for Saturday and Sunday are 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

See you there.
