SYD BLACKMARR
TIFTON'S 'QUEEN OF ARTS' RECEIVES GOV AWARD FOR ARTS & HUMANITIES

Syd Blackmarr, Tifton's "Queen of Arts,"  was among those honored this week by the governor for achievements in the arts and humanities.

Blackmarr was one of 13 individuals or organizations to receive the Governor's Awards for the Arts and Humanities on Oct. 7 at a ceremony at the state capitol. The awards are presented in partnership with the Georgia Council for the Arts and the Georgia Humanities Council.

The Governor's Awards pay tribute to the most distinguished citizens and organizations that have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to Georgia's civic and cultural vitality through excellence and service to the arts and humanities.

"Georgia's arts and humanities sectors propel our state forward by improving quality of life for the citizens and businesses of our state," said Gov. Nathan Deal. "The individuals and organizations honored here today are committed to growing and sustaining Georgia's vibrant culture and history, and I am grateful for their significant contributions to our state."

Perhaps best known for establishing Tifton's Love Affair Fine Arts Festival, Syd Blackmarr has been a leader and pioneer in the development and expansion of cultural arts programs, networks and infrastructure across South Georgia for nearly 40 years.

Beginning in 1976 with her work at the Arts Experiment Station at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, she fostered the creation of eight local arts councils, the first rural arts consortium in Georgia and arts-in-education programs in six counties. Her work led to cities, counties, and private sources increasing their appreciation of the role of the arts in community building. Blackmarr also promoted collaboration across the region, organizing the Performing Arts and Art & Entertainment Series, which attracted large audiences.

In Tifton, in addition to the Love Affair, Blackmarr established the Arts in Black Festival and encouraged the development of La Fiesta del Pueblo, all of which affirmed cultural diversity. She has been a constant advocate for partnerships with educational, artistic and funding agencies that have brought support for arts and humanities programs to rural counties all across South Georgia.

"As a result of her decades of work in this field, a legacy of strong arts organizations, museum exhibits, preservation projects and public art continue to thrive in South Georgia," the governor's awards committee said.

On Facebook, Blackmarr wrote:  "Dear Friends, I feel so surrounded by love and support from all of you. For all of your kind remarks, I am so thankful. But I am also deeply humbled and so aware that the award I received from the governor has my name on it, but it really belongs to all of you who for so many years, supported, encouraged, worked and helped to make the arts thrive in Tifton and South Georgia. It has been a fabulous journey! Let's keep it moving forward together!!!"

Other recipients of the 2014 governor's award are the Freedom Singers of AlbanyLeslie Gordon, Atlanta; Fred and Dinah Gretsch, Savannah; Paul Hudson, Clarkston; Carl Purdy, Atlanta; Douglas Scott, Atlanta; the Activities Council of Thomson; the Atlanta BalletBrenau University, Gainesville; Center for Civil and Human Rights, Atlanta; Meridian Herald, Atlanta; and the Richard B. Literacy Volunteers' Carnival of Knowledge Trivia Contest Set for Oct. 23

Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County holds its 15th Annual Carnival of Knowledge Trivia Contest at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct.  23, at Moultrie Technical College's Tifton Conference Center. The Carnival, a fundraiser that pits three-person teams against each other, is a popular, fun-filled evening with entertainment, food, and  prizes.

"We encourage the public to come to this free event," said Bonnie Sayles, interim director of Literacy Volunteers. "The goal is to have 20 teams signed up at $150 a team." She noted that individuals, groups, civic organizations, and businesses can sponsor teams. Even if they don't have members to play, they may sponsor a team.

"We are keeping the price of a team low so more people can participate," she said. "My husband, Frank, and I have participated in the past, so I can tell you it's a lot of fun to play and fun to watch."

The carnival atmosphere of the conference center will be emphasized by circus decorations and costumes worn by LV members. Pizza by the slice and cold drinks will be sold, and board members will also prepare a refreshment table with their usual tempting treats as a complimentary treat.

In addition to bragging rights as Tifton's trivia experts, the top three teams receive fabulous prizes, said Liz Carson Keith, secretary of Literacy Volunteers board of directors. The top winning team members each receive a night at the Hilton Garden Inn in Tifton and a dinner  for two in the dining room, courtesy of Stafford Corp.

"We are still signing up teams and accepting donations," Sayles said. "If you believe that improving literacy in Tift County is key to our economic success, you need to support this fundraiser in the strongest way possible. Each school dropout that earns a GED diploma, each parent that improves his or her knowledge of health and his or her ability to parent successfully, each person that learns to read better or speak English better helps to improve our society as a whole. We owe it to ourselves to make sure we can continue the programs that make this possible."

VET EXHIBIT OPENS SATURDAY AT AG MUSEUM

The Georgia Museum of Agriculture's newest permanent exhibit opens this Saturday, Oct. 11, showcasing the history of veterinary medicine and honoring the late Dr. Coy Hansel Poitevint.

The exhibit at the Tifton ag museum opens at 2 p.m. Saturday. The new Veterinary Infirmary exhibit is located in the rear of the Feed & Seed Store, near the Drug Store. Light refreshments will be served at the exhibit's opening.

The new vet exhibit will be a valuable tool for teaching visitors about the history and look of veterinary medicine in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and will the only such exhibit in Georgia and several surrounding states, says Curator Polly Huff.

Archives provided by the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia will be stored as a part of the exhibit and made available to visiting scholars and those interested in a deeper study of the subject.
