West River Walk #10
Where the River Meets Long Island Sound
Sunday, October 26, Afternoon

 Two Options:
1.  Meet at 1 PM, Flag Pole on New Haven Green and walk from the New Haven Green to Sound School. Parking in downtown New Haven near the Green will be free.  Roger Uihlein will meet you at the Flag Pole to lead you to the Sound School. Connecting the heart of New Haven by walking to Long Island Sound is a walk few of us have done but is  an important way to see another part of our city.

2.  Meet at Sound School at 2 PM. Parking at the Sound School. We will walk through City Point with Anstress Farwell, preservationist, and George Foote, founder and past principal of Sound School as our guides. They will share important information about the area history and environment.  We will then walk to the Harbour Close Condominiums and attempt to access their boardwalk. We will continue over Kimberly Ave. Bridge to West Cove Gallery area, continue to the sight of the old Bilco factory, where new West Haven mall development is planned.

Option to take public transportation back to the New Haven Green.

On Sundays, the J bus leaves Savin Rock (Surfside, 200 Oak Street) going towards New Haven Green at 1:31, 2:31, 3:46, and 5:01 pm. It's an approximately 20 minute ride.

4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

New Haven Friends Meeting House

Forget the cold. Learn how to bring the sub-tropics to New England!  Jonathan will share his story of building a bioshelter that produces year-round food incorporating whole ecologies into the design. He grows plants like tree collards, figs and citrus in his shelter, well-insulated from the cold. Water supports thriving aquaponics systems with fish, clams, aquatic plants and vegetables. Hardy greens sweeten up during the winter months for delicious March salads. All inside a building made with recycled materials, and powered by the sun.
