Watch Melody Barnes' talk
|
Melody Barnes, former director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, gave this year's Senator Wynona Lipman Lecture in Women's Political Leadership on April 16 on the Rutgers campus. From her choice of topics - Policies that Empower: The Journey from Vulnerability to Engagement - to her inspiring words, Barnes honored the first African American woman in New Jersey's State Senate and reflected her values.
On April 22, CAWP joined the White House and the U.S. Department of Education in co-sponsoring a Conference on Girls' Leadership and Civic Education at the White House. The event brought together educators, media experts, public leaders, scholars, and representatives of youth-serving organizations to initiate the first-ever national conversation about how to expand the vision of civic learning and engagement in order to encourage the participation of women and girls in our democracy. Women Are Ready to RunTM Around the Country
|
 Political ambition was very much in evidence as hundreds of motivated women all over the country received training on how to become candidates for public office this spring through our Ready to Run™ Campaign Training Network.
Programs were convened by: AAUW of Alabama (Birmingham, AL), Mount St. Mary's College (Los Angeles, CA), the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics at Iowa State University (Ames, IA), the Grand Valley State University Women's Center (Allendale, MI), the Southwest Hispanic Research Center at the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM), the Women's Intercultural Center (Anthony, NM), and the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University (Pittsburgh, PA).
