Vote For Our Video "It's Your Turn"
Do you believe women should step up and run for office? Then vote for our video in the "Looking@Democracy" contest (sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council.) CAWP's Kelly Dittmar has created a 3-minute video, "It's Your Turn," inviting women to consider running. Watch it here, vote, and share it with everyone you know! Voting for the People's Choice goes until Thursday, May 16 at 3:00 PM (EDT). A win for Kelly and CAWP would give our message national recognition - and a cash prize! Thanks for your support.

Spring Happenings at CAWP
April 2013 bloomed with excitement at CAWP, with two major events:

Melody Barnes at Rutgers University 4.16.2013
Watch Melody Barnes' talk

Melody Barnes, former director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, gave this year's Senator Wynona Lipman Lecture in Women's Political Leadership on April 16 on the Rutgers campus. From her choice of topics - Policies that Empower: The Journey from Vulnerability to Engagement - to her inspiring words, Barnes honored the first African American woman in New Jersey's State Senate and reflected her values.

On April 22, CAWP joined the White House and the U.S. Department of Education in co-sponsoring a Conference on Girls' Leadership and Civic Education at the White House. The event brought together educators, media experts, public leaders, scholars, and representatives of youth-serving organizations to initiate the first-ever national conversation about how to expand the vision of civic learning and engagement in order to encourage the participation of women and girls in our democracy. Read the blog post here. And learn more about Teach a Girl to Lead, CAWP's new initiative to develop the leadership capacities of girls and young women and encourage their full participation in our democracy, here.

CAWP founder and Eagleton Institute director Ruth B. Mandel speaks about the importance of women's political leadership at White House conference. Other panelists (from l to r): political analyst Donna Brazile; Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, CIRCLE; Rob Candelino, Unilever; and Maria Teresa Kumar, Voto Latino.

Women Are Ready to RunTM  Around the Country

Ready to Run Campaign Training for WomenPolitical ambition was very much in evidence as hundreds of motivated women all over the country received training on how to become candidates for public office this spring through our Ready to Run Campaign Training Network.

Programs were convened by: AAUW of Alabama (Birmingham, AL), Mount St. Mary's College (Los Angeles, CA), the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics at Iowa State University (Ames, IA), the Grand Valley State University Women's Center (Allendale, MI), the Southwest Hispanic Research Center at the University of New Mexico (Albuquerque, NM), the Women's Intercultural Center (Anthony, NM), and the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics at Chatham University (Pittsburgh, PA). And of course, CAWP hosted our own program here in New Jersey for almost 200 women! To see our full list of partner organizations and states, visit our Ready to Run National Network page.
