HART TO RECEIVE $48 MILLION IN GET COLLECTIONS

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) will receive more than $48 million in General Excise and Use Tax (GET) revenue for the third quarter of 2014.

With the receipt of the $48.5 million for the months of July, August and September, the total GET revenue for the Honolulu rail project now stands at $1.34 billion.

The half-percent GET surcharge dedicated to the Honolulu rail system was levied beginning in January 2007 and is set to expire at the end of 2022. It is estimated the surcharge will fund nearly 70 percent of the project's cost, with the remainder paid for with federal funding.

COLLEGE REPS DISCUSS RAIL'S ROLE ON CAMPUS

Administrators from colleges in Arizona and California told members of the HART Board of Directors this week that rail transit systems are providing benefits to their university communities, and that rail will enhance the college experience for students, faculty and workers at campuses on Oahu.

Melinda Alonzo, the director of parking and transit services at Arizona State University, said that in the five years that rail has been serving the university, enrollment has increased, but the number of parking permits issued has declined meaning fewer students are driving to school.

The story is the same at San Diego State University which has had rail service since 2005. Sally Roush, vice president emerita, says students today are demanding green and sustainable options for getting to and from the campus.

The University of California, San Diego is planning to bring rail service to its campus in 2019. Gary Matthews, vice chancellor for resource management and planning, believes the benefits rail will bring will enliven and invigorate the campus and will far outweigh any costs the university may incur to accommodate rail.

In addition to appearing before the HART Board, the college representatives also made presentations to a subcommittee of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents while they were in Honolulu.
