We need volunteers to help with light office work (filing, database entry and record keeping), social media and website updates, and minor computer maintenance and repairs. Just a few hours of your time would be very helpful. We also need more volunteers to participate in our Stream Monitoring Program. If you are interested or want to know more, give us a shout out here.
GSMNP FIREWOOD ALERT
Firewood Alert! Destructive Insects May Be Hitching a Ride

The possession of firewood, whether hardwood or softwood, originating from a location for which a federal or state firewood quarantine is in effect is prohibited in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Proposed Regulation Change: Tree-killing insects and diseases can be transported into the park in firewood. The park is proposing to reduce this threat by changing regulations to allow only heat-treated wood to be brought into the park. If adopted, firewood which is not bundled and certified by the USDA or a state agency will be prohibited in the park beginning in March 2015.

For more information about the proposed regulation change and about these harmful pests, see their website

PAST EVENTS
Protect & Paddle
October 12, 2014

Last year, attorney Mark Hartsoe spurred into action the first-ever Protect & Paddle event to raise funds for the Little River Watershed Association. Sponsors and participants came together for a fun day on the river and a celebration at River John's island again this year on October 12th.

About 60 people braved the rain to enjoy the Little River on Sunday. The 7.5 mile group float lasted about 3 hrs, ending at River John's island. At the end of the trip, participants enjoyed chili, beer from Blackhorse Brewery and music by Leah Gardner & Seth Hopper.

"This is one of our favorite events because is an easy way for people to experience the river, have fun, and support the Little River Watershed Association," said Kim Raia, board chair for the organization. "The more people get out and enjoy the Little River, the more they will appreciate what an amazing natural resource we have right here in our own back yard."

Event sponsors included River Sports Outfitters, The Market at Washington & High , Hartsoe Law Firm and Blackhorse Pub & Brewery.  Thanks to all of our 2014 sponsors!

Carpenter's Elementary Science Day
October 3rd

LRWA attended Carpenter's Elementary Science Day to teach students about the watershed. 300 students from grades 1st, 2nd and 3rd joined us. The 1st graders participated in a story called "Who Dirtied the Tennessee River", and learned about littering and pollutants. 2nd and 3rd graders got the chance to identify macroinvertebrates while learning how insects help ecologists understand how healthy the river is. Thanks to our friends at Carpenter's Elementary for inviting us!

Great Smoky Mountains Half Marathon
September 20th

LRWA volunteers cheered on runners in the Great Smoky Mountain Half Marathon while manning Aid Stations along the route. The race was cup-less, meaning that each of the runners carried a water container that they refilled themselves at each of the Aid Stations - with water from Little River! To thank us, Vacation Races made a donation to LRWA.  Thanks Vacation Races!

Stream School for Kids

September 13th 9am-12pm

Little River Watershed Association held a Stream School for Kids to provide an array of water monitoring activities for our littlest friends of the river. This program was based on STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) concepts and incorporated environmental, chemical and aquatic sciences and stream flow mathematics.  The students learned how to measure river flow, identify fish samples for a fish survey, observe macroinvertebrates, and run chemical tests on water samples.
