What's the ROI from
Medical Home Programs?

What's the ROI from Medical Home Programs? This Week's Challenge: The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model has been called a stepping stone to accountable care. The most recent market data from the Healthcare Intelligence Network found that 59 percent of existing medical homes are now or soon will be part of an accountable care organization (ACO). We wanted to see what ROI has been generated by PCMH programs.

What We Learned: HIN's sixth annual industry survey on the PCMH, administered in May 2012, linked the rise in medical home starts over the last six years to a steady climb in patient satisfaction. The survey captured data on medical home adoption, staffing, technologies, reimbursement and ROI, and other key medical home metrics. According to 95 healthcare companies who responded to the survey, the following ROI was generated by their PCMH programs:

  • Don't know: 50 percent

  • Too early to tell: 29.2 percent

  • Less than 2:1: 12.5 percent

  • Between 2:1 and 3:1: 8.3 percent

  • Higher than 4:1: 0 percent

  • Between 3:1 and 4:1: 0 percent
