Athlete's Foot
Athlete's Foot can manifest or flare especially during the winter  --when moisture is trapped under socks and heavy boots. Anti-fungal creams are available over the counter but you may need to seek advice from your doctor. This is not a condition that you want spreading or worsening over time.

Self-Care at Home

  • Many  anti-fungal medications can be applied to the affected area. These creams should be used sparingly but regularly, at least 3 times per week.
  • It is important to keep your feet clean and dry. Wear clean, absorbent socks made of natural fibers (such as cotton) and change them during the day if your feet become moist or sweaty.
  • If possible, remove the insoles of shoes and sneakers to allow them to dry out over night.
  • Dusting the inside of your shoes and socks with talcum powder or a medicated powder such as Desenex will help to decrease the moisture level.
  • Alternate wearing different pairs of shoes to allow them to dry out for a day or two at a time.
If you plan to see your physician for diagnosis and treatment of your athlete's foot, it would be desirable to stop using any anti-fungal medication  for at least a month as it could inhibit an accurate diagnosis. Your doctor will evaluate your skin to see if your condition is infectious, or inflammatory, or has signs of other conditions.

Why do doctors look at your nails during full skin exams?

Nails can tell us a great deal about the general health of the patient, or even help diagnose skin diseases and underlying systemic medical issues. Kidney ailments, anemias, underlying infections and certain cancers can be associated with specific nail abnormalities.

Malignant melanoma may start under the nail or at the base nail fold (where nail is produced). For these reasons, any dark discoloration under or around the nail should be evaluated by your dermatologist in a timely fashion. That is why we ask that all female patients remove their nail polish prior to skin exam appointments.

Don't Make This Skin Care
Faux Pas
When you  invest in cosmetic products and/or procedures, but do not wear a broad spectrum sunscreen every day-- you are putting your skin at risk.

The skin is constantly susceptible to ultraviolet damage -- which manifests as wrinkles, brown spots, laxity, dehydration etc. Procedures and products can effectively address these issues, but they cannot continue to protect against more damage without daily sunscreen used as part of a complete sun protection program.

Application every day, no matter what the weather is or your planned amount of outdoor time will keep you in the routine and is vital to help keep skin looking youthful and healthy.

Don't just look at SPF, but rather ask us about the most effective UVA-blockers as well. UVA passes through car windows, and UVA is responsible for wrinkles, laxity, and is part of the damage in some skin cancers.
