LOSING MOSES ON THE FREEWAY
"The Ten Commandments are a moral compass that points us toward the true north of human health and wholeness. In neglecting them we lose our way. In this sense the Ten Commandments are promises that give life rather than prohibitions that repress."
~ Dan Clendenin
Some may call it neglect. I've not preached a sermon on the Ten Commandments at MCCDC. This Sunday that will change. One reason it has taken me this long is my belief that the Ten Commandments are best encompassed with the invitation from Jesus "to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself." I continue to believe that Jesus' call to love God and neighbor is a great summary of all Scripture. I believe if one can only remember one thing from Scripture that's a good choice.
Yet, this week, as I've meditated on the Ten Commandments in preparation for Sunday, I'm seeing a deep value in the specificity of the Ten Commandments. I'm seeing them as the foundation for the core teaching of Jesus.
This Sunday I look forward to sharing my thoughts after spending time reflecting on Moses this week. Chris Hedges, in his book Losing Moses on The Freeway, writes, "There is nothing abstract about the commandments to those who know the sting of their violation or have neglected their call." Maybe Hedges is right: in losing Moses maybe we've lost our way on the journey to health, wholeness, community and love. To some, the Ten Commandments may seem restrictive. Yet could it be they point to freedom? Join us on Sunday at 9:00am and 11:00am to reflect with me on this question.
I also personally invite you to bring your beloved pet friends to MCCDC this Saturday for The Blessing of the Animals service at 11:00am. And Sunday, learn more about the 28th Annual Walk to End HIV happening on October 25. If you've walked in the past, please wear your t-shirt so we can thank you in advance and help invite people to join Team MCCDC. Our goal this year is 40 walkers raising $13,500 for this cause so close to the heart of MCCDC and our community.
See you Saturday at the Animal Blessing and Sunday at 9am and 11am.

Nosotros somos ICMDC Unid@s!
Adoremos y Alabemos a Dios!
On Saturday, October 25, Unid@s, the MCCDC Hispanic/Latin@ outreach ministry, will once again hold its monthly worship service at 6pm in the sanctuary here at MCCDC. We will have wonderful music, liturgy, great food and fellowship. Rev. Alberto Njera will be our celebrant and preacher who will deliver Jesus' Good News of radically inclusive love. This will be a special service as we will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15).
The service will be mostly in Spanish; however, the Scripture readings and the sermon are usually translated into English. So whether or not you are a Spanish speaker, please come and celebrate this joyous occasion with us! For more information, contact Tom Simmons, Ministry Intern, at [email protected] or (202) 638-7373.

THIS SATURDAY!
BLESSING
OF THE ANIMALS
Sometimes God sends guardian angels who are clothed in fur, feathers or scales. To recognize the special pets and animal companions in our lives, MCCDC will be holding a special Blessing of the Animals service on Saturday Ocober 4th at11am.
A blessing of the animals is a tradition among many Christian churches and is often conducted in October near the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment.
In order to make sure our animals remain safe, please use their leashes or pet carriers. We'll be sure to have water for your beloved companions.
Please attend with your animal companions-and invite others to attend also.
