Greetings!

Happy November! We had a wonderful October, and we're very happy to say that Hurricane Sandy was unable to stop us! Our hearts are out to our friends, clients, and loved ones still affected by the storm and its damage. We truly hope that everyone can get their lives back to normal very soon.

This month, we're focusing on Synthetic Marijuana. The incredibly dangerous substance has increased in popularity. Although it is somewhat similar to bath salts, our featured drug in September, there are specific dangers we need you to know.

In this newsletter, you'll learn what synthetic marijuana really is, why it's so dangerous, and how we can help.

From all of us at USA MDT Westchester, NY and Southern Fairfield, CT, we hope you have a wonderful November!

Best Wishes,

'Spice' and the Rest: The Story Behind Synthetic Marijuana

Remember back in September when we wrote about just what makes bath salts so incredibly dangerous?  Synthetic drug

If so, you'll recall that it is wildly unregulated. Bath salts are considered "designer drugs," which is a sly way of saying that any ordinary Joe with chemicals and a need for cash can make it.

Well, much of this remains true about synthetic marijuana. Unlike bath salts, there is a clear end goal with synthetic marijuana. Since the psychoactive properties of marijuana come from the THC, that's what designers try to produce.

Except it doesn't work that easily. Instead of directly copying the chemical structure of THC, synthetic marijuana designers mimic the compound. They do this by combining incredibly dangerous chemicals that cause a high "similar" to that of marijuana.

Many people who smoke these products will say this isn't true. The drugs are advertised as genuine marijuana synthetics, and that they consist of a variety of traditionally used medicinal herbs that cause the same effect as THC.

That's not true. That's not how it works, and many laboratories around the world have found that many of the herbs listed on the packaging are not in the actual product.

Just like bath salts, synthetic marijuana is often sold as "herbal incense," and is packaged in small, foil pouches. The most common brands are 'Spice' and 'K2.' Visit this link to view more of the names to watch out for!

Synthetic THC Side Effects

Studies have shown that synthetic marijuana causes side effects not found in use of natural cannabis.

The most dangerous is the rise in psychosis. Synthetic marijuana is able to increase the frequency and duration of psychotic episodes in drug users. Naturally, this leads to an incredibly long list of dangers.

Psychotic individuals are not able to manage their thoughts, feelings, and actions, which leads to:
  • suicide attempts (or even successes),
  • self-harm,
  • fighting,
  • and many more depending on the individual and the dosage.

Studies have also shown that specific synthetic marijuana brands (like Spice, K2, and Blaze) can cause:
  • heart attacks,
  • convulsions,
  • catatonia,
  • temporary paralysis,
  • and vomiting.
By staying vigilant of these symptoms, you can help spot synthetic marijuana use in your workplace before it becomes even more of a threat!
How We Help
Across this nation, business owners struggle to fight substance abuse in their workplace. It's an incredibly different battle to wage, especially with the pervasive nature of addiction.

Synthetic marijuana is an life-ending substance. Many individuals use it over natural marijuana because it is impossible to detect in traditional drug tests.

However, we partner with several labs that offer testing for synthetic substances, including synthetic THC and bath salts. The testing is done through oral swab, shows use within the past 24-48 hours, and can provide accurate results in 2-4 days.

As always, we stay on the cutting edge of drug testing. We partner with labs constantly seeking new ways to confront drug use and abuse. Plus, an extensive range of new drug testing panels has just been announced, and is updated regularly. We'll share more information about these changes very soon!

This is an incredibly serious issue, and we hope you'll contact us with any suspected cases immediately.
