STEM Ed Coalition Meets Education Leaders from Republic of Chad
Through the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the STEM Education Coalition was able to sit down and discuss the importance of STEM education with educational leaders from the Republic of Chad.

There's a national crisis in math; the U.S. ranks 25th in math out of 27 countries studied by (OECD 2012), and 51 out of 144 in a recent World Economic Forum report on the quality of math education (WEF 2014). Though there are many potential drivers, there is one fundamental and often hidden driver of the crisis that is often not discussed: the way mathematics is taught.

The Smarter Balanced consortium is diving into the difficult -and politically delicate -task of setting cut scores for its Common Core exams. The consortium is asking teachers, parents and anyone with an interest in education to spend a few hours reviewing test questions and recommending proficiency levels. Panelists can pick the grade level and subject matter they'd like to review.

Smart Recruiters
Not pre-med. Not business. Not computer science. The most popular college major choice for high school seniors surveyed by CareerBuilder - the majority of whom already have a career in mind - is engineering. We looked at labor market data and job postings analytics from EMSI for all 18 engineering occupations classified by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and all eight engineering technicians occupations (which are primarily middle-skill positions).

Heads of State and Business Leaders Participate in Launch of the "Global STEM Alliance" at the United Nations
The New York Academy of Sciences
On September 22, 2014 at the United Nations, heads of state, leaders of UN agencies, senior executives of major multinational corporations, and major philanthropists announced the launch of the Global STEM Alliance, a collaboration of governments, companies, schools and NGOs devoted to increasing access to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education for students worldwide.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is proud to encourage more women to pursue rewarding careers in engineering through a host of scholarship opportunities. With a single application, traditional and returning engineering students can make their dreams a reality through the SWE Scholarship program. As mentioned on John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" on HBO Sept. 21, SWE has awarded more than $700,000 in financial aid this year alone.

We believed more "doing" and "experiencing" of actual science practices is essential to science education. As Webucator specializes in training in the corporate world, and know how valuable these skills are. So, we've decided to make all of our self-paced courses available for free to STEM students. This includes courses on web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc), Photoshop, Dreamweaver and many others.

National Youth Summit Series

The National Youth Summit Series brings together some of the best and brightest students to focus on maker, healthy living, and agri-science. Designed for high school students (grades 9 - 12), the Summits provide opportunities to learn technical skills, participate in hands-on activities and workshops, learn from leaders in the field, and visit professional and academic sites.

Washington Facts: STEM Edition

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA) are calling for public feedback on proposed Standards for education leaders. The public comment period will last until October 10, 2014.

Shelbyville Mayor Calls STEM Efforts Successful

A successful community and educational development partnership between Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Shelbyville, and Shelby County has increased science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) curriculum for local school students, and benefitted local industry by creating an intentional and collaborative bridge between local industry and education leading to clearer pathways for future success.
