In the Galleries: Artist Talk TONIGHT
Combining interests in anthropology, abstraction, and Kiki Smith's art involving the female body, artist Jessica Larson's new series mines issues of taboos and attraction versus repulsion. Turning the traditional concept of embroidery work on its head by pairing it with the provocative imagery of menstruation, Women Troubles begs the question:

Join Larson, a Professor at University of Minnesota Morris, as she discusses her history in feminist art, the history of blood in art, and how this series came together in a talk that will be information, but with Larson's trademark sense of humor and storytelling. Recommended for all friends, moms, boyfriends, sons and daughters.

These small hats can be stunningly inventive, often making it a point to defy the laws of physics not only in their trimming but also in their ability to stay on your head. Go wild with feathers and beads, or subtle and sophisticated with a little mystery attached with a veil.

Saturday October 4, 9:30 am - 4 pm
Intrigued by the visual in the header of this email? Marbling is the ancient art of printing with designs that are floating on water. For this class, you can create intricate and complex designs with paint and then transfer them to different surfaces, making unique prints. The class will begin with the basic patterns and process of marbling followed by time for you to design dazzling marbled patterns on paper and fabric.
Pictured above: detail from cigar box lid designed by artist Mary Holland using the marbling technique, available in the Textile Center Shop. Also for sale in the Shop: marbled leather wristbands, earrings, wooden bowls, and gorgeous cigar boxes. Mary will be doing marbling a demonstration at the Shop later this fall.
