Farm News & Tom's ReflectionsIt's a Drought!

Normally we should be struggling with cold, wet and muddy conditions, instead this worrisome drought has forced us to keep irrigating, just as we would during the main season. We are in record territory as the driest and warmest winter (this week's high will climb into the upper 70's once again) and the long-term forecast doesn't look good, with predictions of below average rainfall until April.
Here on the farm, we are going to switch to drip irrigation on crops we have traditionally used overhead sprinklers, some land will be left fallow during the driest times of the year, and more careful crop by crop water budgeting by implementing soil moisture monitoring and timing of irrigation will be essential.

CSA Program NewsJoin our CSA today - A Meaningful Connection to Local Food and Farming
Live Earth Farm, built upon a diverse web of mutually supportive relationships of people, plants and animals, ensures that the seasonal flow of nourishing foods from our fields to your plate is healthy, tasty and fair. What makes Live Earth Farm unique is it is both a for-profit farm business while actively engaged in serving as an educational resource to its community. Every year over 1000 children come to the Farm to experience hands-on where and how food is grown; they stain their faces with fruit picked right from the field and get their "hands dirty" by planting, collecting eggs, milking goats, making compost, and baking pizza with freshly-harvested ingredients. On the farm, close to nature, all these activities inspire a deeper connection and understanding of how food choices influence our diet, the health of our bodies, and ultimately that of our planet.
Our website is a great place to learn more about the Farm's education programs as well as much more about our 75 acre farming operation. To give you a "flavor" of how a season unfolds on our farm, Jason our CSA coordinator composed a terrific photo-essay, capturing some wonderful moments with his camera over the course of 2013.
We are starting our 19th growing season, and one of the best and most supportive ways to be a part of the Live Earth Farm experience is by joining the Farm's CSA program. If you haven't yet signed-up, there are still a few Shares left for our Winter Season and our new Choice Share, as well as Shares available for our 2014 Main Season.
