A new analysis from the American Academy of Arts & Sciences confirms a common fear: humanities majors and STEM majors dwell in separate academic silos. STEM majors, especially engineering students, take few humanities courses, the data show. And humanities majors take even fewer STEM courses. But the data also reveal that humanities courses college_campus.jpgare more popular than one might expect. College students, on the whole, earn more credits in the humanities than in STEM, even though science majors outnumber humanities majors.

A bad week for Common Core
Politico
Two new national polls, released Wednesday and Tuesday, found the public souring on the academic standards, which are meant to elevate math, reading and writing instruction across the nation. One of the polls, conducted by the journal Education Next, also found a steep plunge in support for the standards among public school teachers...The Education Next poll also asked people who said they'd heard of the Common Core a series of true/false questions about the standards. Huge majorities got them wrong.

Here's the Evidence that Job Creation is Set to Accelerate for Real in 2014

There's good news in store for the long-stagnant U.S. labor market, if job listings are any guide. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday morning that the number of job openings grew from 4.6 million in May to 4.7 million in June, confirming a trend toward accelerating job creation in the first half of 2014.

Washington Facts: STEM Edition  
We want to remind you that your own U.S. Representative and your own U.S. Senators are more than likely in your area for their District Work Period. They will continue to be in your area frequently until after the November elections. Take five minutes of your time and educate them about what STEM education accomplishes now in your area and what STEM needs for you to do your job better. Remember they want to talk with you about your vote. They need your vote!
