New Milford Hospital's commitment to locally grown goes way beyond purchasing from community farmers, New Milford Hospital is giving back in so many incredible ways. So we asked Dining Services Director Kerry Gold about each of the really unique projects that are going on in and around their kitchen each day!

When and how did New Milford Hospital begin using local ingredients?

In 2006, in response to astonishing upward trends in obesity and related diseases, a hospital executive approached hospital leadership about promoting: a) healthy food as a direct path to disease prevention, and b) local sustainability. In 2007, the hospital CEO signed Healthcare Without Harm's Healthy Food in Healthcare Pledge and in 2008, after an intensive RFP process selected Unidine as the hospital's food service provider due to the company's high standards where quality and sustainability are concerned and their flexibility.  Today, New Milford Hospital's Dining Services procures from eight farms on a rotating basis during the growing season, averaging 4 to 5 farm deliveries per week.

There has been increased emphasis on institutional purchasing of local food, what have you discovered to be the best way to source local ingredients for a dining service of your size?

Some of the best ways I have found to buying locally is getting to know the farmer and letting them know you, and what you represent. It is also important to create as many partners as possible allowing you, the purchaser, a greater product variety. Also being consistent in your practices, by this I mean buying from the same farm on the same day each week, which allows them to set up their distribution routes.

Congratulations to Brittany Otto!!

She tracked every week during the month of June and was randomly selected from our 10% pledgees to receive a peony or fig tree from Cricket Hill Garden in Thomaston! How's that for a tracking prize?! After sharing the good news with Brittany, we asked her a couple questions:

Why is it important to you to be part of the 10% Campaign?

The 10% campaign is important to me because it's a good way to promote locally grown/raised products as well as see what I am putting back into he local economy. It feels good to know that I am making a contribution to keeping products locally sourced.

What's one of your favorite places to find CT grown products?

My favorite place to find CT grown products are farmers markets; specifically the Northeast CT Farmers Markets around where I live. The selection and availability is fantastic. I also enjoy shopping at Sweat Peas Fine Foods in Brooklyn and grabbing a delicious, healthy meal at Heirloom Food Company in Danielson.

Thanks for participating in our 10% Campaign Brittany!

Blueberries
The next in-season CT berry

*Connecticut's blueberry season typically runs from after July 4th - late August.

*July is national blueberry month because that is the peak of the harvest season.

* Blueberries contain more antioxidants than most other fruits or vegetables and may help prevent damage caused by cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.

* America's favorite muffin is, of course, blueberry.

* Did You Know?
The annual harvest of North America blueberries would cover a four lane highway from Chicago to New York if spread out in a single layer.

* Mocking their British roots, the first colonists added blueberries to traditional English fruit and dough puddings and renamed them "buckle," "grunt," and "slump."
