Cycle-Smart Athlete Profile:
Mike Hemme
We will continue to bring you athlete profiles over the next couple of months, leading up to the Cyclocross season. We will be sharing athlete profiles from beginners to pros. We take a lot of pride in our ability to work with athletes on all levels, and help them achieve their goals.

We interviewed Mike Hemme this week. Mike is from Chicago, IL. Mike's main cycling discipline is CX and XC MTB racing, but he also enjoys racing on the road every now and then.

CS: Who is your coach and how long have you been working with him?

MH: I have been working with Shaun Adamson for about three years.

CS: What do you do for work, and how does it impact your cycling?

MH: I work at SRAM as the Team Lead in Drivetrain Development.

CS: Tell us about a proud or breakthrough moment.

MH: The race I am proudest of is the 2012 Illinois State CX Championships. I had finally broken through to the top of the podium in a few local races earlier in the season, but States remained a top goal for me. I made some mistakes early in the race so I had a little extra work getting back to the front, but chased back on with two to go. Prior to working with Shaun I didn't have much in the way of race strategy, but we had worked on it quite a bit that season so going into the last lap I was confident in what I needed to do. It came down to a photo finish, but I got the win. It was an amazing day!

CS: How has Cycle-Smart made a difference for you?

MH: Like most of us out there racing is a hobby for me. I love riding and dedicate the time to it, but with work and travel Shaun helps keep me focused and making sure I not only get the most out of the time I train, but I also really have fun along the way. Shaun knows me well and helps me not only train, but keep a good balance and perspective.

CS: How does working in the industry (cycling) impact your training, your experience at the races, and your interactions with your competitors?

MH: The nice part about being in the industry is that even when I take work trips, they will usually incorporate at least some sort of riding. With the role I have I travel a fair amount, but even when I travel half way around the world to Taiwan there is a loaner bike I can use to get some miles in. The sixteen hour flights don't help and add some challenges to the training schedule, but knowing I will be able to get some great rides in wherever I go is amazing. I'm incredibly proud of the company and products we make so getting feedback from other riders and racers is great. I get quite a few questions on equipment and I'm happy to help where I can. It's exciting to see all the enthusiasm racers and riders have for our products and when the drive train you had a (small) part in developing perform well and help a rider succeed is really rewarding.
