CUGH Global Health Bulletin
September 8, 2014

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friend of CUGH,

The Ebola crisis in West Africa is rapidly worsening. As of the writing of this note, over 3,500 people have been infected with the virus and over 1,500 people have been killed. Alarmingly, the disease is spreading into densely populated urban areas.

There is an acute shortage of medical supplies, experienced healthcare workers, and funds in the region. Doctors without Borders has been bravely shouldering the greatest responsibility to not only care for those infected with Ebola, but also treat people affected with the numerous other diseases and health challenges in this, one of the poorest regions of the world.

We at CUGH have been trying to help MSF identify individuals with the experience and skills needed to stop the spread of this virus and provide essential medical care in the affected countries. Please see MSF's request by clicking on this link and share it with your colleagues widely. Help us identify individuals who can address this crisis before it spreads much further and advocate for greater funding to purchase essential supplies.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best wishes,

Keith Martin, MD

1. Spotlight: NextGenU
Free, accredited, online global health courses

Please see NextGenU.org, the world's first portal to free, accredited, higher education.  NextGenU partners with leading universities, professional societies, and government organizations including the American College of Preventive Medicine, Association of American Medical Colleges, Grand Challenges Canada, NATO Science for Peace, and WHO. Starting with a focus in the health sciences, NextGenU's accredited courses span from college-level pre-health sciences and community health worker trainings through medical and public health graduate training, residency programs (currently in Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine), and continuing medical education.  The courses are competency-based, and include online knowledge transfer, evaluation, local and remote peer and mentored skill-based activities, and a web-based global peer community of practice.

NextGenU's accredited partners, North American universities that are outstanding in each particular course topic, give learners credit for this training (or institutions can adopt them and use them with their students), all for the first time ever cost-free, and also advertisement-free, barrier-free, and carbon-emissions-free.  The courses have been tested in North American medical and public health schools and shown to perform comparably-to or better-than standard training.

If you are interested in learning using these courses, have a look at www.NextGenU.org, and if you'd like to teach or do research using these courses, or to help create other courses, please contact Erica Frank, MD, MPH ([email protected] or [email protected]).

3. CDHAM Health Culture and Communication in Global Health Symposium
Save the Date
September 11, 2014 |Rockville, MD

Join a coalition of US universities and junior and senior investigators whose research focuses on global non-communicable diseases (NCD).  Identify new opportunities to forge partnerships in global NCD research, and to identify potential funding streams to support these initiatives. Engage with members of key funding organizations. Join us and chart the future of global research in NCDs in the US. Health culture and communication is increasingly recognized as playing a critical role in successful global health efforts. However, there remains significant room for enhancement of best practices, standards, and education/training. To that end, the Center for Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Medicine (CDHAM) will host the "Health Culture and Communication in Global Health" symposium to:
  • Share and discuss CDHAM findings and products regarding health culture and communication in global health efforts including understanding the health context, understanding health-specific cultural considerations, understanding cross-cultural health communication, and optimizing the use of health interpreters.
  • Share and discuss current practices and advances in education and training from leading experts from the health culture and communication community.
  • Discuss potential consensus Standards and Best Practices for addressing health culture and communication considerations in global health efforts.
  • Develop a community of interest for further/future collaboration in health culture and communication in global health.

The symposium is open to military, government, and civilian subject matter experts and global health practitioners engaged in advancing health culture and communication considerations in global health efforts.

10. The Age of Sustainable Development
Online Course Taught by Jeff Sachs
Fall 2014 (Sep 9 - Dec 12)

The Age of Sustainable Development will be offered as an online course again this fall. The signup page is here. Please do sign up right away, so that you receive updates regarding the course as well as newsletters regarding the progress of UN negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals.

This course provides an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of sustainable development, drawing on the most recent developments in the social, policy, and physical sciences. Sustainable development is the most urgent challenge facing humanity. The fundamental question is how the world economy can continue to develop in a way that is socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable. The course describes the complex interactions between the world economy and the Earth's physical environment. Ecological processes and constraints (climate, disease ecology, physical resources such as soils and energy sources, topography and transport conditions) significantly shape the patterns of economic development, demography, and wealth and poverty. At the same time, human activities (farming, land use, urbanization, demographic change, and energy use) change the physical environments, increasingly in dangerous ways. The course offers a broad overview of the key challenges and potential solutions to achieve sustainable development in the 21st century.
