LET'S SPIN AGAIN! In case you didn't notice in earlier editions of our Enews, spinning classes are back at Knitting Temptations! Brian Howard is teaching beginning classes for both wheel and drop-spindle spinning. Beginning Wheel Spinning this Saturday, June 28 from 10:00 to 3:00; wheels available to reserve, so there's no need to have your own. And for spinners who already know the basics, check out Brian's Fractal Spinning class to learn this exciting technique! Don't miss these wonderful opportunities to learn from an expert who is always pushing the envelope in terms of texture and color!

JULY KNIT-ALONG NEWS  

Knitting Temptations is proud to be the home shop of Knit Purl Hunter, our own Michelle Hunter, who has been leading popular online Knit-Alongs (KAL) for the last few years. Her July KAL is a pattern sure to please knitters of all skill levels. This mystery design is a two-color hat available in sizes to fit baby, child, and adult. While Michelle won't reveal any early clues, we can let you know that we have seen the gorgeous hat and it is one you WON'T want to miss!

FRIENDS KNIT-ALONG
Join us to knit this perfect on-the-go summer project as we host an
in-store KAL to coincide with Michelle's online program! PLUS we have an exclusive Knitting Temptations bonus. 

The four-part mystery pattern will be revealed one section at a time at knitpurlhunter.com beginning on July 3.

Come into the shop on July 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 2:00-4:00pm OR 5:30-7:30pm -- NO RESERVATIONS; NO FEE; NO INSTRUCTOR.
Knit with other KALers and watch the pattern emerge on your needles as you share tips and encourage each other.
 
SPECIAL KAL CLASS
Now - the bonus...we are pleased to offer a hands-on class with Michelle for expert guidance with Clue #2.

While we can't give away any of the mystery design, Michelle has shared with us that this portion of the pattern features two-handed/two-color knitting, picking up stitches, increases, and more. Learn (or refresh) these skills with the designer in a two-hour class.

Fans of Michelle's Mystery Sock classes can look forward to a totally new and unique design for students with experience knitting toe-up socks!

Michelle misses seeing her long-time Mystery Sock friends and is looking forward to welcoming Knitting Temptations' new toe-up sock knitters. She has been saving a fabulous new design featuring Japanese stitches exclusively for our faithful sock knitters!

What is Mystery Sock? In class, an original sock pattern is revealed one round at a time as students learn new techniques and stitches while the design emerges. Sock aficionados love to see what new magic Michelle has conjured up! At the end of the class, the magician's mystery is revealed for you to see the completed sock. Students leave with a full pattern, new techniques and expert tips for success. Let the sock addiction continue!

Experience knitting toe-up socks is required.

Supplies needed:
  • Yarn: one skein American B.R.A.N.D. by HiKoo (or other solid-colored, fingering-weight), 400-450 yards 
  • Needle: 32" circular needle in US 1 or US 2
  • Cable needle
  • Solid-colored, worsted-weight yarn and appropriately-sized needle to practice techniques in class 

There is homework that must be completed prior to class - you will receive this information upon registration.

BEGINNING KNITTING FOR KIDS

Do you know a child who would like to learn how to knit? This summer, we are taking our very successful Beginning Knitting class and teaching it to kids!

We will offer the class for two eligible age groups:
  • 8 to 11 years
  • 12-17 years

Classes will be offered on either Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays, depending on demand, beginning at approximately 3:00pm and lasting for 2 hours.

BEGINNING KNITTING FOR KIDS

One 2-hour class

Instructor: Bethany Thomas 

Skill level: Beginner Knit; 8-11 years or 12-17 years

  

In this single class, learn the knitting basics of how to cast  on,  knit, purl, and bind off. We loan students the needles and yarn to learn and practice in class. By the end, you'll be ready to make a simple project on you own.

Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays - exact dates TBD

You may register for classes in person or by calling the shop at (614) 734-0618. We require that you make payment in full when you register. 

Supplies & Preparation
Unless we specify otherwise, such as including supplies in the cost of the class, we expect students in our classes to purchase their yarn and other class supplies at Knitting Temptations.

Some classes require pre-work that must be completed prior to class. Please be sure to carefully read the class description and complete any pre-work before coming to the (first) class.

Cancellation/Rescheduling 
Class offerings and dates are subject to change, so please check the Events Calendar for the most up-to-date changes or additions to our class schedule. Also, Knitting Temptations reserves the right to reschedule or cancel a class and our intention is to always give plenty of notice.

Also, we understand that sometimes unforeseen events in life occur that make it impossible for you to attend a class for which you are registered. As a courtesy our instructors and other students, please contact us as soon as possible.

BEGINNING KNITTING 101

Skill level: Beginner Knit

  

As the name implies, Knitting 101 is for the Complete and Utter beginner! In this single class, you will learn the knitting basics of how to cast  on,  knit, purl, and bind off. We loan students the needles and yarn to learn and practice in class. By the end, you'll be ready to make a simple project on you own. For further learning, take Knitting 102!

Skill level: Beginner Crochet

 

Learn chain stitches, half double and double crochet, and triple crochet. Note: Crochet is an incredibly useful skill for knitters -- consider bringing the power of the crochet hook to your knitting projects! Students need to bring or purchase a crochet hook size US G (4 mm) or US H (5 mm). For further learning, take Crochet 102

Skill level: Easy Knit

 

This class is designed to build a foundation of the fundamentals of knitting. Students MUST BE comfortable with knitting basics including long-tail cast on, knit and purl stitches, and basic bind off.

Concepts covered include stitch types, stitch patterns, choosing yarn and needles for projects, gauge and when it is important, basic shaping stitches, and finally, a brief introduction to circular knitting.

In between class sessions, students will work on homework swatches and small items to reinforce concepts learned in class.

We provide the yarn. Students need to purchase 24" circular needles in sizes US 6 and US 8.

There is no pre-work for this class, but there is homework between classes, so please plan accordingly.

Skill level: Easy Crochet 

 

This class is designed to move you beyond beginning crochet skills. Students MUST BE comfortable with crochet basics of single, half double, and double crochet.

 

Concepts covered include gauge, various stitch patterns, how to read crochet patterns, and finishing. In between class sessions, students will work on homework to reinforce concepts learned in class. 


We provide the yarn. Students need to purchase US H (5 mm) hook.

There is no pre-work for this class, but there is homework between classes, so please plan accordingly.

Students will learn about fiber and how twisting it makes yarn. All fiber and supplies are provided for use during class. Knitting Temptations has 2 Schacht spinning wheels available for use during class available on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you do not own a wheel, please request to reserve one at the time of class registration. If you own a wheel (any make/model) and would like to learn how to spin on it, bring it to class!

Fiber and other supplies are available for purchase after class.

Class will begin at 10:00am, with an hour break for lunch at noon, and continue until 3:00pm. Please bring your lunch or plan to eat out at one of the local restaurants.

BLOCKING BASICS

Skill level: Easy Knit

 

 

Blocking is a finishing skill that every knitter should know! Students will learn the different techniques to block as well as guidelines for blocking projects based on the fiber content.  Learn how to use tools such as blocking wires, t-pins, and dental floss.  

There is pre-work for this class that must be completed BEFORE class, so please plan accordingly -- prior to class: 

With worsted-weight yarn (SimpliWorsted, Plymouth Encore, Cascade 220...) and needle size suggested on ball-band, cast on 34 stitches.  Knit three rows then continue as follows:

WS Rows: K3, purl to the last three sts, K3. 
RS: Knit all sts.

Continue in this manner until swatch measures approximately 5 inches from cast on edge.  Bind off. BRING SWATCH TO CLASS!

MY CONSTANT COMPANION BAG

Skill level: Easy Knit 

Learn how to wet felt as you make a wonderfully roomy bag that will become your Constant Companion for projects! The bag was designed with knitters in mind and the pattern is written for a variety of yarn weights and can be knit with a single strand of bulky or double-stranded worsted or light-worsted.  

  

The class covers the bag construction techniques including picking up stitches, make i-cording, striping, and, in the final class, a demonstration of wet felting in a top-loading washer.

Note: Students who need access to a top-loading washer for the felting process may make an appointment to use the one at the shop. 

Supplies needed:
  • Yarn: Single strand, worsted or bulky - 900-1000 total yards. Double strand, light-worsted or DK - 1400-1600 total yards.
  • Needle: 24" circular in US 11 or US 13
  • Stitch marker

Shop sample knit with Brown Sheep Bulky in 3 colors.

These adorable little newborn booties made with angora make a perfect shower gift! Learn how to knit these gems in one piece with a seam to create the perfect little booty.

PICKING UP STITCHES

Picking up stitches is a common technique used in many knitting projects. Knit some fun and beautiful "log cabin" inspired washcloths while you master this essential skill!
  
Students will learn different methods for picking up stitches and how to do so without creating additional bulk or a ridge on the back of the work.

These washcloths make great gifts! 

  

Supplies needed: 
  • Yarn: 372 total yards of worsted-weight cotton in 3-4 different colors (this is enough to make several cloths)
  • Needles: 24" circular in US 7
Shop samples knit with 4 colors of Rowan Handknit Cotton. Other suggested yarns are Plymouth Fantasy Naturalle, Cascade Avalon (cotton/acrylic blend), Cascade Ultra Pima, and Rowan Cotton Glace.

There is pre-work for this class that must be completed BEFORE class, so please plan accordingly -- prior to class: 

With first color, cast on 15 stitches and work in garter stitch for 27 rows.

BABY SURPRISE JACKET

Baby Surprise
From the genius of Elizabeth Zimmerman, some say this jacket is essentially a rectangle with shaping. It will not look like a sweater while you're knitting it, but be assured that it does, indeed, fold up into a jacket! You will learn simple shaping (with increases and decreases), picking up stitches, and sewing seams. Sizing is determined by the yarn and needles chosen.  

  

Supplies needed:
  • Yarn recommended for class: 350 yards of fingering-weight yarn to fit newborn (up to 3 mos).
  • Needles: US 3 or US 4, straights or 24" circular 
  • Stitch markers 

Sizing options:

Sport-weight yarn, US 3 or US 4 to fit 6 mos-1 year. 

DK-weight yarn, US 5 or US 6 to fit toddler (1-2 years).

Worsted-weight yarn, US 7 or US 9 to fit small child (2-4 years).

THRUMMED MITTENS

These wonderful mittens are created using a technique called "thrumming" which uses wool roving to make stitches and line the mittens at the same time. These cozy mittens will keep you warm even in the coldest weather and are so much fun to make! 

  

Supplies needed:

  • Yarn: 200 yards of worsted-weight wool
  • Needles: 32" circular in US 6 (for Magic Loop) or US 6 DPNs
  • 50 grams of fiber 
Shop sample knit with Brown Sheep Worsted Superwash. Other suggested yarns are Malabrigo Worsted, Malabrigo Rios, Swans Island Worsted, Kenzie by HiKoo, or Cascade 220.

With the worsted-weight yarn, cast on 40 stitches. Join for knitting in the round and work in knit 2/ purl 2 ribbing for 3 inches.

Skill level: Intermediate Knit
Learn how to make this lovely shawl designed by Stephen West to show off the exquisite colors and fibers of the yarn. If you've knit a basic triangle shawl before, learn how easy techniques such slipping stitches and changing colors can create something much more complex looking!

Supplies needed:
  • Yarn: 300 yards of fingering to worsted-weight in a neutral color AND at least 396 yards of fingering-weight in a yarn with color changes 
  • Needle: 40" circular in size US 7
  • 2 stitch markers
