June in Botswana!!

Howdy!!

I literally feel like I was writing my May update yesterday so the fact that June is ending is highly alarming.

This month, I have started working regularly with the social worker in Kanye.  Every Monday and Tuesday, I spend all day at the social worker's office or in Kanye meeting with clients.  A lot of what the social worker does is assist orphans and vulnerable children.  They check their well-being; make sure they have what they need, etc.  I am getting plugged into one of the junior secondary schools (around ages 13-15) and representing the social worker's office in the cases there.  It is pretty exciting!!

Most of June, we spent preparing for the "June 16th" event.  It is called the Day of the African Child. It commemorates the sacrifices made by South African youth, who in 1976 protested the inferior quality of their education. All of the area high schools came and participated. Some did a drama, some did traditional dance, some played in a band, some participated in a debate, etc. It was really cool to watch. The point of the day was to remind everyone that they are cherished and to take an active role in making their education better.

Otse has also been going really well.  The number of people coming each week has been consistently growing. A lot of good questions are being asked, and everyone seems to care about the answers.  In July, we are going to be going to Otse twice a week instead of once a week.  I am so encouraged by the progress being made in Otse, and I cannot wait to see what else God has in store for this small village!!
