Get FIT Spotlight: Andrea

"There is no other program like Get FIT. I tried to use other gyms, but they always had issues with my chair. I can't be defined by my chair; I'm still human, I'm a woman, I have needs, and I have feelings. Get FIT is my rock."  Read more

SpotlightGet FIT Spotlight: Andrea

 -Interviewed by, Adeola Sonaike

In Houston, Texas you will find many gyms catering to the health and wellness needs of sports and fitness fanatics. However, if you look closely, you will also find 1st Class Training, created and owned by former NFL player Antonio Armstrong. 1st Class Training became an official Get FIT site in 2013 providing fitness, nutrition and life coaching services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities at 3 of its gym locations.

It is here, where you will meet a hardworking and motivating poet, Andrea Walton. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Andrea participated in Get FIT Texas with the goals to increase her strength and improve her health. Andrea had spent some time looking for a gym that could meet her needs, stating "I tried to use other gyms, but they always had an issue with my chair; I can't be defined by my chair, I'm still a human being, I'm a woman, I have needs and feelings. I know when I've reached my limit, and when not to strain myself, but I still wasn't able to experience fitness at any local gyms." Working alongside her trainer Lemuel Jackson, Andrea would exercise 3 times a week. Some of her sessions included her getting out of her chair and walking, this would be the only time that she would get out of her chair.

At the conclusion of her 12-week Get FIT program, Andrea reflects on her experience with Get FIT @ Gym, "Get FIT means everything to me. I believe in the program. I am thankful to my trainer for working hands on with me tirelessly. He would put himself in my shoes in order to figure out the best way for me to do an activity, and that's how we worked through it all. I love Get FIT, it was a tremendous and valuable experience for me, for once I was able to experience truly working out. I would do anything to continue participating in the program. Get FIT is my rock."

Get FIT thanks Andrea for taking the time to share her experience with us.

WellnessCornerWellness Corner: Back to School!

Get FIT @ Camp Aranzazu, Texas

Summer is always great time to develop
new, healthy habits with the family. However, keeping this going can often be tough once School starts due to busy schedules, homework, and the changing weather. We are sharing some of our new  #WellnessWednesday posts that can help your family begin the school year in a stylish and healthy way!

 1. A family that gets FIT together, stays together!
Getting FIT is much more enjoyable when the whole family participates. Walks after dinner time are a great way to burn some calories, increase digestion, and talk with one another about their day.

2. The best coaches are the ones who find a way to include everybody!
Schools are now required to provide inclusive or adaptive recreation opportunities for children of all abilities. If your school needs our help with setting up a Get FIT @ School Program, send them to us! E-mail [email protected] listing your school district, state, and the activity you would like to see at your child's school; we'll do the rest!

3. Stay focused, go after your dreams and keep moving towards your goals!
Setting Get FIT Goals are a great way to stay motivated throughout the school year. Maybe your goal this year will be to pick at least 1 vegetable at school lunch. Treat yourself to a healthy reward once you reach your goal.

4.Take care of your body, it's the only place you have to live!
A new school year may be challenging, however by taking care of your body and maintaining a positive outlook, you'll find that you can overcome any challenge. :)

Created by Aiden Gould, age 12

When Aiden broke his arm, his mother bought him 4 mint plants to cheer him up. After planting them he created this bright and tasty salad that he enjoys with whole-wheat crackers!

Ingredients

2 (15 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
6 carrots, grated
3 tomatoes, diced
1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
1/4 small purple cabbage, thinly sliced (about 3 1/2 cups total)
1 cup fresh mint, finely chopped
Zest and juice of 3 lemons
1/4 cup olive oil

Directions
  1. In a large bowl, combine the beans, carrots, tomatoes, pepper, cabbage, and mint. Toss to continue
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the lemons zest, lemon juice and olive oil

Get FIT Intern Receives National Nomination

Get FIT Congratulates Chris Alvarez for being nominated for the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in all of college football. Inspired by his 14 year old brother who has down-syndrome, Alvarez has been an outstanding volunteer for the Get FIT program at Rowan University. "To make someone who might not always feel special actually feel special - and show them that they can do it - is priceless," Alvarez says. With plans to see how far he can go in football and to be an ambassador for health and fitness to the nation's youth, we look forward to his continued commitment to Get FIT.
