A Message from the Pastor

Dear Disciples of Jesus at American Lutheran,

Paul gives us a "how to" list of advice on how to live as a faithful Christian in his letter to the new church start in Rome: "let love be genuine...extend hospitality to strangers...live peaceably with all...overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:9-21).

Beautiful sentiments, but tough to put into practice!

Jesus shows us that love is not always "warm and fuzzy." It is fervent, relentless and practical. And the way we learn such love is by coming back each week to the table of grace-so that we may be filled with the life-giving love of Jesus.

See you in church,

Pastor Gretchen

Announcements

News from Congregation Meeting
Unanimous Approval

The vote to enter into a new lease with Brighton Hall (BH) for use of the school building and Administrative Office building was approved unanimously 30-0.

Now the Council will oversee the revision of our lease with BH and convene a new Future Facilities task force to begin work on a phased renovation project for the church and 747 building.

In the meantime we will all continue with conversations to discern God's mission. Watch for periodic updates and communications as we move forward!

Ice Bucket Challenge
Thanks to you...

Last Sunday we raised $233 from the "Ice Bucket Challenge" to benefit Lutheran Social Services. Thanks to everyone who contributed, and to Pastor Gretchen for braving the ice water! Matching funds have been applied for from Thrivent which will stretch our donations even further.

LSS Ice Bucket Challenge

Sunday School Teacher wanted

We are looking for a regular part-time paid Sunday School teacher for our Children's Church during the 10am service each week. Responsibilities include engaging children from Pre-K through middle school for 30-40 minutes with a Bible story and craft activity. Children are dismissed from worship following the children's sermon and return to the service for Holy Communion. Our adult child care provider and the older middle school youth work with the lead teacher as assistants.

We use the on-line "Spark" curriculum as a teaching resource.

For more information or to apply for this position, contact Pastor Gretchen or call 818-846-0295.

Lutheran Disaster Response
Gaza Humanitarian Assistance

It has been a frightening time in the Middle East with more than 1,800 people killed and nearly 10,000 injured - with most of the victims reported to be civilians and children.

Our brothers and sisters in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land have asked for our help. One way we are responding is through Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem, a place that provides medical services regardless of race, gender, religious or political affiliation. When you give to Lutheran Disaster Response, you are helping send medical teams from Augusta Victoria into Gaza to care for the increasing number of people injured due to this conflict.

Lutheran Disaster Response, working with The Lutheran World Federation and Augusta Victoria Hospital, is able to provide specialized care, medications and supplies to triage and treat patients in Gaza injured by the conflict.

We pray for peace in the Holy Land; may God grant comfort in suffering to all who are in need of healing. Together, we will continue to monitor the situation and will walk with our brothers and sisters affected by the crisis.
