Greenway 2012 Annual Report: A Year of Achievements
The Greenway was created to be a force for change in the Hudson River Valley. The Greenway, along with our partners, have sought to protect, promote and celebrate our natural, cultural, and historic resources, and these efforts have been greatly rewarded. Since 1991, we have seen an increase in recognition of the Hudson River Valley as a region, as a destination, and now, as a world class destination for its combination of scenic, cultural and historic assets. Thanks to a report by the National Park Service and Alliance of National Heritage Areas, we can even more effectively demonstrate the value of what we do:

- Tourism generates over $4.7 billion dollars annually in the Hudson River Valley.
- The National Heritage Area program generates $584,986,026 million in economic benefit, supports 6,530 jobs, and generates over $66.6 million in tax revenue*
- The Hudson River Valley Ramble generates over $21 million per year*

Awards to support projects in environmental conservation, historic preservation, the arts and to strengthen tourism in the Hudson Valley. Water Resources Research National Competitive Grants Program
The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the National Institutes for Water Resources
requests proposals for matching grants to support research on the topic of improving and

Citizens' Institute on Rural Design (CIRD) is issuing a request for proposals to rural communities facing design challenges to host local workshops in 2013. National Environmental Education Foundation Every Day Event Grants
Every Day Event Grants provide funding to public land organizations, or Friends Groups, to engage their community on a public land site. These grants help fund events that are educational, recreational and/or volunteering-based. Read more... (March 8)
Improving Access to the Hudson River Estuary and its Tributaries
NEIWPCC and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Hudson River Estuary Program, in partnership with the New York State Office of Environmental Justice, are soliciting proposals to develop plans and projects to provide recreational and visual access to the Hudson River Estuary and its tributary streams, for Environmental Justice neighborhoods that lack access opportunities. Sea-Level Rise, Storm Surge, and Flood Adaptation Planning
NEIWPCC and NYS DEC's Hudson River Estuary Program are soliciting proposals for the organization and implementation of collaborative local task forces in communities bordering tidally-influenced shoreline of the Hudson River Estuary. The purpose is to assist communities in preparing for sea-level rise, storm surge, and waterfront flooding, and to facilitate technical assistance from appropriate state agencies. Read more... Fields Pond Foundation
Provides grants to community-based nature and land conservation organizations that serve to increase environmental awareness by involving local residents in conservation issues in the six New England states and New York State. Priorities include land acquisition for conservation and project grants for trailmaking and other enhancement of public access to lands, rivers, and coastlines. Heritage Weekend to become Path Through History Weekends
Heritage Weekend has been a great success, and we thank all of those who have participated in this phenomenal program. Heritage Weekend will not take place in May, but will become part of an even greater effort to promote the unique history of our State, Path Through History Weekends!

Scenic Hudson's 50th Anniversary

The Hudson River Valley was the birthplace of the modern environmental movement. From Pete Seeger's Clearwater being the clairon call for cleaning up the river, to the "Scenic Hudson decision," the Hudson River Valley has been in the vanguard of the modern environmental movement.

Scenic Hudson was founded on November 8, 1963, by six citizens determined to halt a proposed hydroelectric project from defacing iconic Storm King Mountain in the Hudson Highlands. In 1965 the organization achieved its first victory-a court ruling (known as the "Scenic Hudson decision") that won all Americans the legal right to shape projects affecting their environment. The environmental protections that Americans enjoy today are rooted in this small group of people and their fight to save an iconic part of the Hudson River Valley. The group and its partners finally ensured Storm King's protection in 1980. This campaign is considered the birth of the modern grassroots environmental movement. (Source) In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Scenic Hudson has launched a special Website that showcases the organization's history and will provide news and information about upcoming events to mark this milestone. Featured on the Website is an interactive timeline of Scenic Hudson's successful efforts for environmental advocacy in the region.
Also in celebration of this 50th Anniversary, Scenic Hudson has arranged a curated selections of photographs called "On Time and Place," on display at the Hudson Opera House through February 16th.
Congratulations to Scenic Hudson on this milestone. The world may well be very different today had Scenic Hudson never been founded. Perhaps it would be a world without SEQR, NEPA, the Clean Air Act, or the Clean Water Act. It would almost certainly be a world without the Hudson River Valley Greenway. |

Town of Pittstown: Historic Farmsteads Added to National Register
In 2011, the Greenway awarded an $8,000 matching grant to the Town of Pittstown, a Greenway Community, for the development of nominations for eight historic farmsteads to the National Register of Historic Places. The Hudson River Valley Greenway previously provided the Town of Pittstown with a grant to conduct a Cultural Resource Survey in 2008. As a result of that survey, the Town of Pittstown, in partnership with the Pittstown Historical Society, will prepare nominations to the National Register of Historic Places for twelve historic farmsteads identified in the survey.

The Town has had four of its farmsteads successfully listed on the National Register, including the Cornell farmstead at 292 Lower Pine Valley Road, the Thomas farmstead at 703 Johnsonville Road, the Brownell farmstead at 606 Graveside Road, and the Gifford farmstead at 276 Gifford Road. Jessie Ravage, the historic consultant gathering the information on the farmsteads and composing the applications has assembled an impressive archive of photographs, deeds and genealogical material on each of the farmsteads. Three more farmsteads are being prepared for nomination.
This project highlights the significance of farming to the landscape and the culture of the Hudson River Valley. The Greenway is please to be a partner in helping to recognize and document this important piece of regional heritage.
