Hello and Hello!
Welcome Coty

St. Mark's is delighted to welcome Coty Colson to our staff. Coty began working as the Administrative Assistant in the office on Monday, July 21.  Coty was raised near St. Louis, Missouri but came to Chicago in 2009 to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He currently serves part-time as the chapel organist and pianist for Catholic services at Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago. He comes with a wealth of administrative experience, cares deeply about his work and is looking forward to getting to know us at St. Mark's! Again, stop by the office to say hello and welcome Coty to St. Mark's!

Thanksgiving for New Life

We give thanks with Patty and Kyle Zegan for the birth of their daughter, Tess Annabelle Zegan who was born on July 17, 2014.  We thank you God for this new person, Tess, child of your creation.  May the knowledge of you dawn on her, may the love of you grow in her, and may the grace of your Spirit draw her to you.  Amen.  Notes of Congratulations may be sent to the family at: The Zegan Family, 850 Forest Avenue, Unit A, Evanston, IL 60202

Thank you Patty for your time as St. Mark's Administrative Assistant.  Patty, Kyle, and Baby Tess will soon be moving to Florida where they will be closer to their extended families.  Patty has been an amazing addition to the St. Mark's Team and will be greatly missed.

Where I Worshiped on My Summer Vacation ...

During the summer, we hope that everyone at St. Mark's will take one Sunday to worship somewhere else. You heard right - we want you to not come to St. Mark's for one Sunday this summer and attend another church's worship. But, here's the catch - we want you to be a Greeter Spy. We have developed a "Greeters' Spy Sheet" which is available on our website at http://bit.ly/GreetersSpySheet

Use the Greeter Spy Sheet as a tool for your visit. After worship, complete the form and return it along with a copy of the visited congregation's bulletin or welcome brochures (or both) to St. Mark's. You can either give these to any member of the vestry, to Pastor Debra or to the volunteer office at the church. We'll use the data we collect to identify some best greeting practices (and perhaps some warnings about the worst!) and we'll create a bulletin board of "Where We Worshiped On Our Summer Vacations" with the bulletins and brochures. We hope children will participate too! Invite your child(ren) to provide their input on the Greeter Spy Sheet and/or have them take some photos - or draw a picture - of the congregation you worshiped in. Photos can be sent via e-mail to [email protected] (make sure they are clearly labeled by city and state (for our bulletin board) and who any people are in the photo). Drawings can be returned along with the Spy Sheet and church bulletins. We hope everyone will take part!

Social Justice & Outreach Opportunities

St. Mark's continues its commitment to young people through its many social justice and outreach opportunities. Each Sunday we pray, "Bring newness and change to our streets, O God, that we might commit ourselves to our young people and address the epidemic of gun violence which plagues our communities, our country, and the world. Awake, O Streets, rise from death!" Following are a list of ways in which you can get involved with the St. Mark's community in helping to create a better world.

Social Media and St. Mark's

But if anything in Sunday's service - a prayer, reading, hymn or the sermon-moves you, please feel free to tweet it or post it to Facebook #StMarkEvanston. While you're at it, "check-in" with us on Foursquare!

In The Community
God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Loving finds all of its meaning in relationship. The following are opportunities to be in relationship with one another and with the community of Evanston.
Taiz Prayer Vigil at St. Matthew's
On the 4th Wednesday of each month all are invited to gather in the Chapel at St. Matthew's at 7:30pm for Taiz Prayer, and this coming Wednesday, July 23 is no different. The Taiz Community, a community in France dedicated to peace and reconciliation, was established by Brother Roger (a Reformed Protestant) as an ecumenical community that would further our oneness in Christ. Today people go there from all over the world and represent Protestant, Roman, Anglican, and Orthodox Christians.

During this current time of fear and tragedy in our world, this month's Taiz prayer will be dedicated to prayer for peace through cooperation and understanding among not only our Christian brothers and sisters, but among the world religions and, indeed, all people. In our hearts and minds, in the singing and in the silence, we will hold in prayer those touched by the shooting down of the Malaysia plane, the violence in Israel/Palestine, and the immigration crisis with Latin American children.

"Holy Spirit, you breathe upon what is fragile. You kindle a flame of living charity and love that remains within us, still alive under the ashes. And through you, even the fears and the nights of our heart can become the dawn of a new life."

Come, See, Listen: Journey to the Holy Land
December 26, 2014 -  January 8, 2015

It is difficult to understand the full impact of the Israeli Occupation of the Palestinian people without traveling to the Holy Land ourselves.  The Diocesan Peace and Justice Committee has organized a trip to the Holy Land to help us to better understand the complexities of the history and of the conflict between the Palestinian people and Israel.  We will visit the sites where Jesus lived and died and from which Christianity developed its traditions. We will meet with religious leaders from all three faiths, as well as community organizers, members of the United Nations and government organizations in order to gain a different perspective and perhaps leave us with greater questions to pose to our own leadfers in the United States about our involvement and responsibility in this conflict.  The cost of the trip, including airfare, will be $2580-2680/person, double occupancy not including insurance and one meal/day.  Two %500 scholarships are available for young adult participants.  Deadline for registration ($500.00 deposit) is September 15, 2014.

Members of the diocese familiar with Israel/Palestine and knowledgeable about the conflict are availalbe to speak to your church.  Contact Rev. Anthony Vaccaro, M.D. [email protected]
