Challenge for Compassion - Are you ready for the Challenge for Compassion? Join us for this day-long event, Saturday, July 19. As part of the Compasionate City Initiative, the Challenge for Compassion is for people of all ages to raise funds and awareness for charities and organizations through participating in various fun-filled events! The City of Westland will be holding a Zumbathon for kids grades 2-6. There is no set donation amount, but any proceeds will go to children suffering from cancer at St. Jude's Children's Hospital. The Zumbathon, which is planned specifically for young participants, will provide a venue to demonstrate caring and support for each other, and provide fun physical exercise.

Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings. Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location.

- There will be a meeting of the Disability Concerns Committee on Monday, July 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Friendship Center, located at 1119 Newburgh.

- The Westland City Council will meet on Monday, July 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers inside Westland City Hall, located at 36601 Ford Rd.

The City of Westland has scheduled two more meetings throughout the month of July, which will focus on the new sanitation and garbage collection program. The meetings are open to the public. The dates, times, and locations are as follows:

-Tuesday, July 22, 6 - 7 pm: Dorsey Center, 32715 Dorsey.

-Tuesday, July 29, 6 - 7 pm: Friendship Center, 1119 Newburgh Rd.

Movie Night - Join the William P. Faust Westland Public Library for their 2014 Friday Movie Summer season - this summer's theme ties into the Summer Reading Program: "Fizz, Boom, Read"! This Friday, July 25 the movie is the 2001 Oscar-winner for Best Picture, "A Beautiful Mind," directed by Ron Howard and starring Russel Crowe. The movie is about a brilliant but asocial mathematician who accepts secret work in cryptography, and then his life takes a turn for the nightmarish. Doors open at 6:30 and the movie will begin at 7 pm.

Be Proud, Be Responsible - The Westland Youth Assistance Program and the Taylor Teen Health Center is hosting a "Be Proud! Be Responsible!" workshop for youth. Be Proud, Be Responsible! is a pregnancy and HIV/AIDS prevention program for adolescent youth ages 12-18. It is interactive, fun, and most importantly, it works.

The next workshop will take place Saturday, July 26 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Westland Library, located at 6123 Central City Parkway, . Westland Farmer's Market Held Every Thursday - The Westland Farmer's Market will be held from 3 - 7 p.m. every Thursday in the City Hall Parking Lot, located at 36601 Ford Road. This is the ultimate site for farmers, growers and producers to sell their own products directly to the public. Residents now have the opportunity to catch a FREE ride to the market at the following locations and times. *All times are approximate and dependent on weather, traffic, available space, etc.
