Plus Extended Early Bird Deadline!

Money Quotient is thrilled to share our full speaker lineup and agenda for the 2014 M.Q. Retreat--"Making a Difference: Financial Life Planner as Agent of Change"!
We are proud to introduce you to this panel of innovative thinkers who are eager to share their expertise, knowledge, skills, and effective and easy to implement strategies with the M.Q. Community! We are also excited to fill you in on the other events that will take place during Retreat week!
DAY ONE

TIM KASSER, Ph.D.
Author/Professor of Psychology at Knox College

"A Scientific, Psychological Perspective on Values-Based Approaches to Financial Planning"

Many financial planners use a values-based approach, attempting to help clients match their financial behavior to their values.  This workshop will provide an overview of the scientific, psychological literature on how values are organized in the human mind.  Tim will review theory and research that 1) differentiates between intrinsic goals (for personal growth, connections to others, and helping the world) and extrinsic goals (for money, image, and status); and 2) shows that intrinsic goals promote greater personal, social, and ecological well-being, as well as higher quality motivation.  We will also discuss ways to apply this literature to help activate and encourage intrinsic values in clients.

AMY N. MULLEN
Vice President of Money Quotient

"Closing the Generation Gap: Insights and Strategies for Building Successful Relationships with Gen X and Y Clients"

The average age of FPA financial planners is 56 and the majority of their clients are in their 50s and 60s.  Research shows that the lack of age diversification in clientele is not only dangerous to a firm's sustainability but also decreases the valuation of the practice in the eyes of a potential buyer.  Understanding your own perspectives and biases as well as what motivates these individuals will be key to establishing an engaging and effective working relationship with them. Amy will first review research in behavioral finance and positive psychology and then provide practical strategies for creating an effective decision making framework that bridges and transcends generational differences.

LEARNING LUNCH

"Be Bold: Take a Proactive Stance in Changing Your Clients' Aging Experience"

The Journey into Elderhood workbook is designed to guide clients through a series of exercises that will help them plan for, and take charge of, their aging process.  These steps will not only prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead, but also help them recognize opportunities to increase their life satisfaction and sense of purpose as they grow older.  In this Learning Lunch session, co-authors Ben Coombs and Carol Anderson for a discussion on using this unique workbook to engage your clients in important conversations and thoughtful preparation for their later years.  In addition, Ben and Carol will introduce a new slide presentation and facilitator guide for conducting client workshops based on the Journey into Elderhood exercises and content.

SHERI FITTS
Marketing and Branding Expert/President of ShoeFitts Marketing

"Branding: Your Super Power"

Branding means different things to different people--at different times.  From the first sentence of an email you send, to your logo, and at every other point you interact, your brand is the impression held by others.  Sadly, financial planners often fall under the spell of 'good enough' as their firms shift and change.  They eventually miss out on the greatness an emotionally relevant brand can bring into their practices--and into their lives.  In this session, you'll learn the secret-code behind a super-powered brand where stories, unique experiences, and meaningful imagery combine to generate deeper client relationships, nurture positive change, and infuse energy into your Financial Life Planning practice.

TIM KASSER, Ph.D.
Author/Professor of Psychology at Knox College

"A Scientific, Psychological Perspective on How the Relationship Between Financial Planner and Client Can Catalyze Change and High-Quality Motivation"

Life-centered, values-based financial planning rests on a high quality relationship between the client and the financial planner.  This workshop will review psychological theory and research showing that when one takes an "autonomy-supportive" (vs. "controlling") approach to relationships, people respond with a higher quality of motivation.  Specifically, supporting personal autonomy helps individuals to feel a sense of choice and connection, which thereby helps them to deeply internalize the behaviors and beliefs that have been suggested, resulting in higher quality and more persistent motivation.
DAY TWO

THOM ALLISON, CFP
Veteran M.Q. Licensee/Advisor/President of Allison Spielman Advisors
"Brain Science: Clues to Helping Your Clients Make Better Decisions"

According to a recent ad sponsored by the Financial Planning Association (FPA), financial planning is about getting your finances working together toward a common goal.  However, if you drill down just a bit further you realize that financial planning is about making decisions. This leaves us with the questions: How do we make decisions?  Are there ways we can make better decisions?  During this session we will look at what the academic community is learning about how our brains make decisions.  Armed with this information we will evaluate some of the popular literature about cognitive biases and behavioral finance to learn how we can help our clients make better decisions.

TIM MAURER, CFP
Advisor/Author/Director of Personal Finance for the BAM ALLIANCE

"Understanding Your Story to Help Clients Find Theirs"

We each have a unique story and an innate yearning for creating a narrative of our lives, as do our clients.  Regardless of our technical capabilities, without the ability to see a client interaction as one in which we come beside them on their journey, joining our story with theirs, our ability to have a meaningful and lasting positive impact in their lives is limited. Without the ability to recognize and articulate our own story, we're unable to most effectively ignite those of others.  In order to affect the positive change we hope to see in the lives of our clients, we must journey into a territory even more adventurous than the lives of others--the territory of us.

KATRINA L. LIUKKO
Director of Education for Money Quotient

"Motivating Client Change through Understanding, Empathy, Reiteration, and Clarification"

Helping your clients achieve their true life vision and align their finances with their goals and values often includes encouraging change in one or more facet of life.  In order to successfully navigate the changes you advise, clients must be intrinsically motivated and personally connected to their financial plan.  This presentation will explore the ways in which you can engage your clients and facilitate positive change by employing techniques related to understanding, empathy, reiteration, and clarification.  We will explore expert advice, psychological theory, and empirical research to discover why these areas are key to successfully motivating client change.

LEARNING LUNCH

"Back to Basics: Connecting Life and Money via
Cash Flow"

The First Step Cash Management System™ creates a personalized cash flow plan for your clients--one they will understand, co-create, and actually use!!  First Step's simple decision making framework will clarify their day to day choices, secure their future needs, and fund their dreams.  Nevertheless, how you introduce this powerful tool to your clients and guide their implementation will have everything to do with the level of commitment they feel and demonstrate.  In this Learning Lunch session, learn best practices from the creators of First Step and from your peers who are effectively using this tool to facilitate positive change in their clients' lives.

KEITH FERRIN, M.Ed.
Speaker/Communication Coach/President of True Success Coaching

"Framing Conversations and Inspiring Action"

While we all know that information is necessary for communication, we also know that information can be shared without true communication occurring. Without clear purpose and action, information gets shared and forgotten. This session is entirely focused on making sure that conversations are framed in a way that simplifies preparation and delivery for you,  ensures understanding and inspires action for your clients.

BOB COLE, CLU, ChFC, CASL, CFP
Veteran M.Q. Licensee/Advisor/President of Financial Architects, Inc.

"Living Inside the Bucket"

Financial Life Planning can be a challenge to the most accomplished practitioner, but for one who is not centered him or herself, it is almost impossible.  Bob will share a simple system to help the advisor to keep balance in his or her life.  By relating his personal experience of over forty years as an advisor, he will impart a practical approach that anyone can use.  Implementing this structure will not only strengthen your consultative ability, but will also improve your sense of fulfillment and confidence in your own life journey.

MARTY KURTZ, CFP, AIFA
Veteran M.Q. Licensee/Advisor/President of
The Planning Center

"Financial Life Planner as Agent of Change"

Personal Observations and Vision

In this session, Marty Kurtz will lay the foundation for meaningful dialogue by first sharing his experiences and insights regarding the multifaceted role of Financial Life Planner as Agent of Change.  What is the potential for this growth producing mindset in our own lives, our clients' lives, our communities, and within the financial planning profession?

M.Q. Vice President, Amy Mullen, will then join Marty to pose questions that matter and facilitate conversations that count.  Join your peers in this spirited and collaborative session that will produce great ideas and action plans.  Lastly, Amy and Marty will guide us in a harvesting process to reflect on our time together, share meaningful highlights, and declare our intentions moving forward.
