Career Connection

The numbers are convincing - students who choose a STEM major (encompassing science, technology, engineering and math-oriented disciplines) earn more than non-STEM majors. In fact, the top ten bachelor degree majors with the highest median paychecks are all in STEM fields, according to the National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices.

Wyoming STEM Professors Defend Common Science Standards
Education Week

The debate over the Next Generation Science Standards rages on in Wyoming. The state board officially blocked adoption of the common standards in March. Earlier this month, a group of churches in the state came out in support, saying the teaching of evolution "does not interfere with faith."

Committee Leaders Unveil Principles for Strengthening America's Higher Education System        
Education & Workforce Committee
House Education and the Workforce Committee Chairman John Kline (R-MN) and Higher Education and Workforce Training Subcommittee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) today released a white paper outlining key principles that will guide the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. As part of the committee's continued effort to strengthen America's higher education system, the white paper includes a number of policy proposals to reform federal postsecondary education law.
Why Science? An Unemotional Argument for Federal Investment in Research

What is so special about science? And why should the federal government invest in it? As Congress emerges from years of making spending decisions largely through continuing resolutions and sequestration, last year's budget agreement enables it to actually prioritize discretionary spending. To succeed in this process, advocates for scientific research must answer two important questions: Does science justify spending taxpayers' hard-earned dollars? And is it "better" spending than other federal outlays?

How Much Leverage Does Arne Duncan Still Have Over Race to the Top States?

For the past four years, the U.S. Department of Education has been able to withhold-or threaten to withhold-a piece of a winning state's Race to the Top grant if officials weren't following through on their promises. This happened in Hawaii, which eventually righted the ship, and Georgia, which so far has not, at least in the department's estimation. That's cost the Peach State nearly $10 million in money that was supposed to go to help implement teacher pay-for-performance.

Particle Physics: U.S. Should Not Cede Research Leadership to Other Nations

A panel of eminent physicists recently issued a strong warning to policymakers: "Without the capability to host a large project, the U.S. would lose its position as a global leader in [high-energy physics] ..., and the international relationships that have been so productive would be fundamentally altered."

Biology Olympiad Provides Recognition to STEM Students
Every year, 20 bright young students (selected from 10,000 students based on test scores from the USABO Open and Semifinal Exams) compete to represent the U.S. at the International Biology Olympiad. During these two weeks, competitors study under the direction of U.S. biologists who are experts in the fields of cellular and microbiology; plant anatomy and physiology; animal anatomy and physiology; ethology, genetics and evolution; and ecology, ethology and biosystematics.
