It looks like Hong Kong may soon end its link with the US dollar. It's about time.

Michael Jackson invented the Moonwalk. Return of the Jedi opened in theaters across the world. IBM released its most advanced personal computer yet- the XT, with a standard 10 megabyte hard drive.

And after nearly a decade of eratic swings and collapses, the Hong Kong government pegged its currency (the Hong Kong dollar) to the US dollar at a rate of 7.80 HKD per USD.

This was a big move for Hong Kong. The Hong Kong dollar had originally been backed by silver until 1935 when, facing a shortage of precious metals, they pegged it to the British pound.

While I appreciate that you need to hire somebody, you bear responsibility to be an educated person to converse intelligently with your new professional. It is only the fool who would hand all their assets off to a wealth manager without understanding what he is or is not doing for you. And this fool deserves to lose all their money in two years.

This is a huge area that is not easy to simplify or boil down. There are thousands of books out there. This is a synthesis of much studying, experience, and school of hard knocks, so it is not footnoted.

Geezer: Something to chew on as we pass the time......I sure hope that Tlar's perspective/intel is correct with regard to the RV/rate vs. Kap's float theory...

Currencies don't revalue when they change Exchange Regimes, they simply move from one to another. So the current rate is 1166 which means when they enter Article VIII and a new regime it will be at 1166.

That being said, it won't stay there long. Every expert that I have ever seen has stated it is under valued which means that it will rise.

And if Iraq lines up the economic activities as we stated, it should be like turning on a kitchen facet because once the CBI opens the Capital Account, investment will flow into Iraq and put people to work, new constructions, businesses, etc.

RDiddy I posted this question in another thread - can one of you big-brains answer it please: Is the vote for PM won by a simple majority? I believe that would require 90 votes for anyone-but-Maliki. That's just 7 more than the coalition, isn't it?

Tlar: In the na (National Alliance) they only need one half plus one of 178. If not everybody shows then it is stll one half plus 1.

In parliament they don't need any until they vote for the PM nominees COM.

If the parliament votes yes, one half present plus one it is over.

Once the NA nominates the PM it is over because all coalition ministers will accept his COM.

I believe he will submit his list on the same or next day. He has had two months to figure who he wants and I am sure he already knows and it has been passed around and agreed by the blocks. Then it is officially a government. It is over. Tlar

Is Your Future Solid Financially?

It takes far more to retire than one might expect. Over time inflation takes a big bite out of an income stream. IF ( not likely) our inflation rate remains at about 3% a year then in 20 years your buying power is only one third what it is today. That is not going to cut it.

You can plan your own retirement or get a professional. Either way you need LOTS more than one 25K dinar note will yield. IF you do not believe this, ask a grandparent how they have fared over time.

So don't quit that job without a replacement income stream. Make sure you have replaced the income flow BEFORE TAXES and that it is flowing regularly. This will take a few months or a quarter at least. Don't forget to include:
