Message from the Director of Graduate Student Life
|
Greetings!
Hopefully you've all successfully survived Sandy and enjoyed a safe and happy Halloween. November is indeed a very busy month, so here are a few significant highlights worthy of your attention: Election Day is Tuesday, November 6th. Please make sure you exercise your right to vote! It's been a long and grueling campaign season, and by now you probably feel like Abby does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArY6-1d7upI Veterans Day - On this day we commemorate the sacrifices of our nation's veterans who have courageously put themselves in harm's way so to protect our liberties and freedoms. Please show your support by wearing yellow on November 12th, and be sure to thank any past or present military personnel you encounter for their service to our country. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTukSLm_PCA Thanksgiving Day - On this day we gather with family and friends to give thanks for all the blessings we've received throughout the year. Also on this day, we nurture our love affair with turkey and our favorite amino acid, L-tryptophan. Although I enjoy turkey as much as the next person, I must confess that I am actually afraid of turkeys unless they are plucked, stuffed, and bathed in butter. Live turkeys are evil. I'm sure the reporter in this video clip would agree with me: Movember - November is the month when Mo Bros around the world cast their razors aside in an effort to grow the most awesome moustaches and other forms of facial hair in support of men's health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. All the best,
R. Darrell Peterson, Ph.D.

The week culminates in a performative reading of "The Good Body," a groundbreaking play about body image by Eve Ensler (author of "The Vagina Monologues") which promotes the idea that one's body is never broken and never has to be fixed.
