September's food... Butternut Squash

My personal favourite of the vegetables in season this month is butternut squash - perhaps because it was quite a staple for us in my youth in Zimbabwe, boiled for ages, chopped in half and then served with a dollop of butter and a sprinkle of salt and black pepper. Also great roasted with garlic and olive oil as a side dish or whizzed up in a soup.  It is very easy to grow in a veg patch or window box (or on the thatched roof of an African mud hut!!) and is rich in complex carbohydrates, a great source of vitamins A and C, beta-carotene, magnesium, manganese, calcium and potassium.

Olympian promotes Sussex food & drink

Olympic gold medal winner and inspiration Sally Gunnell OBE has shown her dedication to fresh, local produce by becoming patron of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards this week!

Earlier this year, Sally helped kick off the 2012/13 awards at the South of England Show, revealing that it was eating good, super-fresh ingredients which made the difference to her fitness and allowed her to win gold at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Having found out more about the awards, which are all about celebrating the best local food and drink in Sussex, she now wants to be a part of them.

"It is much healthier to eat fresh, local food - and it's great to support your local community at the same time, so I am a huge advocate of eating local," said Sally Gunnell, who grew up on a farm and has lived in Sussex for many years.

Said Clive Beddall OBE, Chairman of the Judges: "We are delighted to have Sally on board - this takes the awards to a new level and Sally's energy and spirit will help us to spread the word even further about the superb local produce made in Sussex."

Public voting closes at midnight on 14th October, so please visit www.sussexfoodawards.biz to have your say. Tickets for the awards, a superb 7-course Sussex banquet at the Amex Stadium, are also now on sale. Businesses interested in sponsoring next year's awards should contact sandra@naturalpr.biz
