IT'S SUMMER LEARNING SEASON!
Awareness Builds

Libraries everywhere are kicking off summer learning programs with media announcements and festive events. Several ULC members have shared press coverage including a local TV news story on King County Library System's new summer learning program, Thinkology: The Study of Fun and a feature spot on San Jos Public Library's Summer Reading Challenge that aired on Comunidad del Valle, a Bay Area public affairs show. Keep the videos flowing!

Put Your Summer Learning on the National Landscape

Summer Learning Day 2014 takes place on Friday, June 20. This national advocacy day is designed to spread awareness about the importance of high-quality summer learning activities to help close the achievement gap for our nation's youth and support healthy development in communities across the country. Libraries are critical partners in community summer learning initiatives but are not always recognized for their role - register your library's summer learning program on this national map that the National Summer Learning Association is building now!
ON THE INTERNET
Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality is a hot-button issue on the internet landscape. The Oregon Library Association is awarding its annual Intellectual Freedom Champion of the Year Award to OR Senator Ron Wyden for his work on many fronts, including privacy and net neutrality. The awards program, held at Multnomah County Library at 2 pm today, will feature a panel discussion on the implications of net neutrality that will include Senator Wyden, MCL Director, Vailey Oehlke, ULC Executive Board Member Michael Sherrod and others. The discussion will focus on the urgent public policy issues that arise from this debate and the critical role that libraries play as the gateway to digital access for all. We expect the event will be videotaped and will provide a link as soon as possible, along with an overview of net neutrality and its implications for public libraries.
