From the Governor to Milner-Jumoke: It's about Results

GovandMayorMilner Turning a school into a magnet school is one thing. Starting a new school from scratch is another. But successfully turning around an existing low-performing school is the holy grail in education reform - what everyone is trying to prove can be done, despite few examples of success to point to. When Gov. Dannel Malloy and Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor came to Hartford's Thirman L. Milner-Jumoke Academy last week, they came for an update. Here's what they got.

Many of the city's best and brightest high school graduates end up right here, as one of a multitude of "Hartford Scholars" enrolled at the University of Hartford. They're receiving half scholarships for all four years, qualifying for additional scholarship assistance, and being targeted for incredible internship and job opportunities. More than access and opportunities, it's about results.

Some 300 people cheering and participating on 43 teams at our 6th Annual Community Spelling Bee presented an unusual picture for a Friday night: Coming together as educators, community supporters, and parents and children, they had a great time for a good cause.

With well over 200 business leaders in the room, featured keynote speaker and nationally recognized reform superintendent Paul Vallas preceded the Governor at the CT Business & Industry Association's annual meeting Wednesday night and answered the question, "Why is the current state of education so poor?"
