URGENT!: Santa Barbara County Supervisors to Discuss PLA at Tuesday's Meeting!

As we have been informing you for some time the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors have been getting pressure from local union bosses to place their $90 million North County Jail Expansion under a PLA. In April the Supervisors first discussed the issue and voted to have staff bring it back for further discussion tomorrow, Tuesday, July 8th

The item is on page 21 of the Board's agenda and we are encouraging all area contractors and taxpayer advocates to attend and speak up for open competition and against the PLA.

The meeting will be held at the Joseph Centeno Betteravia Government Administration BuildingBoard Hearing Room511 East Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria, CA 93455, and it begins at 9:00am. We estimate the item will be discussed around 10:00am.

If you are unable to attend the meeting please email the Supervisors today and encourage them to support fair and open competition.

Massive Development in Petaluma Targeted for Union Greenmail!

CFEC and Labor Issues Solutions' Kevin Dayton reports here on our exposure of construction union "greenmail" against the Basin Street Properties Riverfront Mixed-Use Project at the Petaluma Planning Commission. As usual, getting a Project Labor Agreement on construction is apparently the purpose of the relentless union objections under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to the development.

The Planning Commission approved the project on a 5-0 vote. It now goes to the Petaluma City Council on July 21st, where unions will likely continue to threaten the developer with CEQA complaints.

We are encouraging all local contractors to attend this meeting that is tentatively scheduled for July 21st, at 7:00pm and speak up for the project and against union greenmail. You can also contact the City Council and inform them about the importance of fair and open competition.

Mailers Sent to 10,000 Voters in City of Fairfield Highlighting City Council Support for Union PLA

Mailers are being received by thousands of Fairfield voters educating them about the Project Labor Agreement (PLA) that the Fairfield City Council voted to approve "negotiations" on with local union bosses in April for the City's new Train Station Specific Plan

The mailers encourage voters to contact the City Council and demand that this project be built with fair and open competition. You can view CFEC's press release here and the mailer below.

This issue, and the PLA itself, will be coming back to the City Council in the near future so stay tuned!

PLA on $100 Million Oil Production Facility in Carson

Big Labor has secured a large PLA in the Los Angeles region. The project involves a state-of-the-art 200-well production facility at the Dominquez Hills oil field. Since its discovery in 1923, the field has yielded 274 million barrels of oil.

"We are fortunate to have the skilled Building Trades participating in the construction of this facility," said Jim Eastlack, General Manager with OXY.  "They will provide the experienced crafts and the training for the local hires we need."

Environmental and community approvals are still needed before this project can move forward.

Setbacks for California's High-Speed Rail Boondoggle

Who is still for it? In addition to the governor and the legislature, it has support from engineering and construction firms that could benefit from contracts, some construction unions, romantic rail buffs, and some environmentalists. The Sierra Club, however, has said it is concerned that diverting cap-and-trade revenue to an infrastructure won't result in reduced emissions of that old debbil carbon any time soon. The high-speed rail authority had been banking on Amtrak to buy rolling stock jointly, thus saving money for both.

Peter Hannaford - American Spectator -- 06/26/14

High-Speed Political Reckoning?

But all of this is beside the point. The Democrats' chief aim is to lift public support for the beleaguered train and head off a voter revolt against their members this November. They hope promising jobs and benefits closer to their constituents' homes will stifle criticisms of the train. But do they seriously think that undertaking another expensive and impracticable make-work project will improve public confidence in liberal governance? Mr. de Leon told the Los Angeles Times recently that Democratic legislators are "going to have to save the governor from himself on high-speed rail." The more urgent priority ought to be saving themselves from themselves.

Allysia Finley Wall Street Journal ($) -- 07/03/14

California High-Speed Rail Fairytale

The ministers, aka California's dominant party's legislators, play along with the charade by repeating the mantra "we need high-speed rail to solve our problems ... it is the future." Each time the authority and the governor have hearings on the topic, they ignore the warning signs and continue the procession right toward the cliff. However, a small group of landowners, the County of Kings and the Kings County Farm Bureau have made the statement "there is no high-speed rail project."
