HDDC Newsletter: The Beloved Community

In Memory of Edward Jay Jackson, III

Our hearts and prayers are with our board member and Old Fourth Ward resident, Economy Jackson, for the loss of her talented and inspirational son, Edward Jay Jackson, III on June 23, 2012. He was known as a creative prodigy, producing more in his 20 years than some do in twice his lifetime. He touched many lives with his warm spirit and is an example of being a force for good in this world.
Sweet Auburn Political Advocacy

HDDC recently met with US Congressman John Lewis, Atlanta Councilman Kwanza Hall, Fulton Commissioner Joan Garner, and National Park Service Superintendent Judy Forte to build support for a coordinated effort to preserve and revitalize Auburn Avenue. Our government leaders are fired up and ready to go!
Sweet Auburn Stakeholders Meeting
HDDC convened a meeting of over 30 Auburn Avenue stakeholders on July 25th to discuss how we can achieve our individual objectives while preserving and revitalizing Sweet Auburn. Some of the attendees were representing organizations that have been on Auburn Avenue since the 1800's, while others are just getting started. We're excited about the collaboration and momentum building around this critical initiative.
Sweet Auburn Economic Development Tour

Fulton County Commissioner Joan Garner organized an economic development tour for Sweet Auburn on August 17th to raise awareness and identify resources for revitalization. Attendees included the U.S. Small Business Association, Fulton County Economic Development Authority, Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall's office, the National Park Service and HDDC. Thank you for your resourcefulness, Commissioner Garner!

Dreamkeeper's Expo at The King Center

HDDC was one of 25 organizations featured at the Dreamkeepers' Expo hosted by The King Center, National Park Service, and Center for Disease Control on August 25th. To commemorate the 49th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, The King Center had performances, prizes, and showcased organizations that are making significant contributions to fulfilling Dr. King's dream. Pictured above, the Ryan Cameron Foundation shares information with a visitor.

About Us
The Historic District Development Corporation (HDDC) was co-founded by Coretta Scott King and Christine King Farris in 1980 with a mission to preserve, revitalize and prevent the displacement of residents in the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic District.

Since our founding, we have redeveloped and historically preserved over 110 single family homes, constructed nearly 500 units of multifamily housing and added over 40,000 square feet of commercial space in the Old Fourth Ward.
