Ecuador Battle of Pichincha:
May 24 Battle of Pichincha is a public holiday in Ecuador. Ecuador remembers the bravery of the Patriot army which bravely fought for the independence of Quito, the current capital of Ecuador, and other provinces surrounding the city leading to the establishment of Ecuador.

The anniversary is celebrated every year on the 24th of May. The Battle of Pichincha took place in 1822 on the slopes of the famous Pichincha volcano, an active volcano located in Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador. The war was led by Antonio Jos de Sucre against the last president of the Royal Audience of Quito, Field Marshall Melchor Aymerich (1754-1836). This event is one of the wars under the South American Wars of Independence which was carried out to liberate the countries in South America under Spanish rule. The success of the Patriotic army in the Battle of Pichincha resulted in the independence of Quito and other major provinces belonging to its administrative jurisdictions. This event led to the eventual establishment of the Republic of Ecuador on May 24, 1822.

Festivities occur all over Ecuador especially in the historic city of Quito around the Pichincha volcano. Ecuadorians carry the country's national flag in the street and adorn their houses with Ecuadorian flags as a symbol of nationalism and to signify the spirit of the celebration. The government also holds military parades and aerial exhibitions by the Ecuador Air Force during the occasion. - See more at: Holidays Around the WorldEcuador Commemorates the Battle of Pichincha

International Children's Day in Salinas
An important opportunity for ex-pats to be part of the solidarity of the community.

Written and submitted by Susana De Calero

In Ecuador on June 1 of each year, educational institutions (schools and colleges), government organizations, NGOs (non-government organizations) are working on behalf of children and adolescents, organizing events at various facilities, to remember and reflect on the rights of children. They are celebrated with music, games, artistic presentations and sharing sweets, among other initiatives.

The Air Force Academy at the Salinas Air Force Base has a program named WINGS FOR HAPPINESS and offers a 20 minute airplane flight for children of scarce resources.  On May 30th, AFA will celebrate Childrens Day for 130 children who will benefit from this event. The Salinas Coffee Klatch Ladies Group will be engaged with the community, participating with the donations of 130 snacks (hot dogs and juices).

I believe this is a big opportunity for expats to be part of the solidarity of our community.  Read more about International Children's Day here...
