Hi everyone,
I was fortunate to go on my first ever cruise to the western Caribbean. I really debated going in to a tanning booth before I left but never had time. I did use a self tanner on my legs so I wasn't totally stark white. I really enjoyed the whole cruising experience and yes, I laid in the sun BUT....... I lathered up with sunscreen every morning before I left our room. I enjoyed laying around the pool for a couple of hours in the morning and I never got burnt. I even got my husband to lather up because he has skin that turns red when he looks at the sun and he really did well also. It is really nice how the pool area is set up because there are a lot of options in the shade but you can still be pool side and watch all the action. The bad news is I can barely see a tan line but I knew I would come back to Oregon, cover up and it would fade before our summer comes anyway. Oh Ya, I also had this huge brimmed hat that I wore.
It is nice with all these great sunscreens that you can still be outside and active. You don't have to change your life style but you really should protect your skin. Here is some great information on preventing skin cancer.
Julie
Preventing skin cancer
- Never use a tanning bed or sun lamp. (tanning beds can increase your risk of melanoma by 75%)
- Wear sunscreen and lip balm every day. (UVA/UVB broad spectrum, at least SPF 30)
- Wear clothes that protect you from UV rays. (Heavy materials can block rays but a see through Tshirt has little UV protection, There are protect ants that you can add to your laundry)
- Wear sunglasses that offer UV protection every day.
- Try not to spend time outdoors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Finding skin cancer
- Perform skin self-exams. This can help you find skin cancer early when it can be cured. Look for anything changing, growing, or bleeding. Use a mirror to exam every part of your skin.
- Get screened for skin cancer. (Especially if light colored eyes, skin and hair, skin that burns and freckles, more than 50 moles, history of indoor tanning or sunburns.
