Mary Black Health System will host a special edition of its Walk with a Doc™ program:
"Walk with a Dog" on April 26th at 10:00 am.
Community walkers and their dogs can join Dr. Carla Gentry on the Mary Black Walking Trail and discuss healthy living with a medical professional. Need a dog? You can adopt a dog from the Spartanburg Humane Society which will be on site during the walk. Maybe you would just like to "borrow" a dog without taking it home? Dog walkers welcome! Carla Gentry, MD, is board certified in family medicine; she is currently practicing at Mary Black Family Medicine - Dorman, located at 5229 Highway 221 in Roebuck, South Carolina. She will be joined by her three Australian Shepherds, Stormy, Maisy, and Cooper.

Mary Black Health System is offering this free program to promote healthy living. "We are proud to strengthen our commitment to the wellness of our community, connecting them to resources to keep them healthy and provide any follow-up care in our health system," says Walk with a Doc™ Coordinator Kenny Dyer.
 
Mary Black Health System offers the free Walk with a Doc™ program each month, featuring a different physician or healthcare provider. Everyone is welcome to participate. The walking trail is located directly across from the main hospital building at 1700 Skylyn Drive, Spartanburg.

Childbirth Class
Thursday, May 1 from 6 pm - 8 pm
Education Classroom
Cost: FREE
This class concentrates on the last three months of pregnancy. Key elements of this class include: ways to reduce anxiety, pain management options, stages of labor, pushing, delivery methods and postpartum care. We will assist you in understanding the process of labor and delivery and answer questions about the birth of your child. Classes are taught by Certified Childbirth Educators.

Breastfeeding Class

Learn breastfeeding basics and the benefits breastfeeding offers to both mom and baby

Are you a little nervous about caring for your newborn's basic needs? This class will give you insight into what to expect when you see your precious newborn for the first time. You will learn about diapering, bathing, feeding and symptoms that indicate when your baby may be ill. Circumcision and umbilical cord care will also be discussed.

A support group designed specifically for breastfeeding mothers that need peer-to-peer support throughout the weeks and months after baby arrives.  A lactation consultant will be available to answer any questions.  Baby weight-checks will be offered at each meeting.

Gibb Named Dean of Mary Black School

Of Nursing At USC Upstate

The University of South Carolina Upstate announces the appointment of Dr. Katharine Gibb as dean of the Mary Black School of Nursing effective April 1. She will provide administrative leadership and oversight for all face to face and online programs across two campuses.

 

 

Dr. Gibb came to USC Upstate in 2008 as assistant dean and assistant professor of the Mary Black School of Nursing and has since served in the capacity as both associate dean and interim dean. Additionally, she holds the Mary Black Endowed Chair for Nursing and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

 

"Dr. Katharine Gibb's wealth of knowledge and experience makes her the ideal selection to lead the Mary Black School of Nursing," said Dr. Tom Moore, chancellor of USC Upstate. "In today's ever-changing world of medicine, Dr. Gibb will deliver the right leadership as USC Upstate creates and provides the best educational environment for our students and healthcare community."

             

Gibb earned an Ed.D. in curriculum in higher education from the University of Sarasota, a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Boston College School of Nursing. Gibb currently serves on the Greenville Technical College Advisory Board and chair of the South Carolina Deans & Directors.

 

The Mary Black School of Nursing at USC Upstate, fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the South Carolina Board of Nursing, is one of the Southeast's most highly regarded nursing institutions offering a four-year pre-licensure degree, and the largest RN-BSN nursing program in South Carolina available in face to face and online opportunities. Beginning this fall, the Mary Black School of Nursing will also offer a Master of Science in Nursing with an emphasis on the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) role.

Tour Four of Spartanburg's Most Beautiful and Historic Homes
Sunday, April 27 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

These private homes are located on Spartanburg's east side include Red Bluff (1981), Cricket Hill (1938), Atkins House (1929), and Wofford House* (1900)

�         Red Bluff, located at 3021 South Pine St., is a replica of Carter's Grove Plantation in Williamsburg, Virginia. It features magnificent woodwork and salvaged products that tie in
local and regional history.

�         Cricket Hill, located at 1140 Woodburn Road, was the first home in the state to be air conditioned. This French provincial home is filled with such treasures as a one-piece staircase, Madagascar Mahogany flooring, and concealed doorways.

�         Atkins House, located at 441 Connecticut Avenue, was often called "the gas station" in the 1960s. Art Deco hardware, art, antiques, and the appreciation of food and wine make this one of the finest homes in Spartanburg.

�         Wofford House, located at 571 East Main Street, is a combination of Neoclassical design with its generous arches and columns with many elements of the Arts and Craft Movement. The estate was subdivided in the early 20th century to form the Converse Heights Subdivision.

For the past 18 years, Spartanburg Regional Hospice has partnered with Wade's Restaurant to provide a special Easter dinner for our patients and their families. A $55 donation will feed 10-12 people. Safe Kids Spartanburg urges parents and caregivers to make sure their child safety seats are properly installed in their vehicles at the Safe Kids Inspection Station. Safe Kids will have certified child passenger safety technicians available to provide hands-on instruction on installing car seats and booster seats outside the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health facing East Wood Street.
