A P R I L  2014

Grass Mountain_13 Greetings from Midland!

While every day at Midland provides opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and learn from firsthand experience, Experiential Week is a unique learning opportunity. With the concentrated time and dedicated resources, students learn to dig a little deeper and go a little farther. From all accounts, the 2014 Experiential Week was all we hoped it would be.

Our faculty gave great reports from a backpacking trip, solar installation, and service learning project helping to build homes.

9th graders:

"... brought enthusiasm, humor, and a willingness to step into the unknown, which set the tone from start to finish." Derek Harwell '88

"... blossomed as a caring, functional outdoor community." Eve Southworth

"... were industrious and flexible the entire time!" Kyle Taylor

10th graders:

"... a great group this year: on task, interested, patient, and collaborative. They are putting together the materials we gave them in ways we don't even suspect." Paul Gelles

"It was great to see the kids having fun, working hard, thinking seriously, all the time knowing they were adding to the place they live and learn." Phil Hasseljian

"Watching this group of students happily tackle the week with grace and boundless energy was delightful and inspirational." Celeste Carlisle

11th graders:

"... productive, efficient, curious, innovative, and gracious. They worked hard to learn the basic skills of construction." Jos Juan Ibarra '87

"... worked happily and industriously, pounding probably thousands of nails." Ian Cummings

"It was great to see our students have the opportunity to give back to others in a way that allows for their strengths to come out." Don Redl

As we come into the year's final stretch, I look forward to seeing many of you during Alumni, Parents and Friends Weekend, April 25th and 26th.

Sincerely,

Will Graham signature

MIDLAND ALUMS:
Jenny Petersen
'96 and
John Isaacson '94

Jenny and John learned a thing or two about tenacity and hard work at Midland. Now married, they recently welcomed twin babies and are putting those skills to work!

John is a Comic Arts Instructor at Portland Community College and Jenny an elementary school teacher. John is the son of Midland Alumnus, Deming Isaacson '61.

"As a teenager, I was deeply hungry for independence, self-reliance, and the opportunity to face new challenges. Midland allows young people to develop character by providing an environment that fosters resourcefulness, resilience, and ingenuity. Going to classes and living in log cabins, you have to face the weather. You can't change the wind, but you can learn to live with it. Best school ever! Thank you Mom and Dad!"
