Fellow Sheepdogs & Supporters!

Praying that you had a blessed Palm Sunday and that you're in much anticipation for Passion Week and Resurrection Sunday (aka, "Easter")!  In the past, I have been guilty of coming down a bit on those whom I euphemistically describe as C & E [Christmas and Easter] "Christians" but my own pastor provided solid correction as part of weekend's message (and one that goes hand-in-hand with our Bible study below). Here's the link:  The Joy of Being Used by God. Regardless, PLEASE make plans to attend Easter services with your families this coming weekend.

Speaking of our Bible study messages, we had some trouble getting last week's version out to many of you (primarily those with with Yahoo addresses) due to a Constant Contact glitch so here it is again in case you missed it: "A Cop's Strength & Power".

That message also leads us into this week's Bible study/devotional -- God's "Battle Plan" for Your Life. Regardless of whether or not you serve in law enforcement, do you understand that God has a plan for your life and that we are in fact engaged in both spiritual and -- for cops and combat military personnel in particular -- physical battles?  Scroll down for the recap and ask the Holy Spirit for help to stay and/or get back in the battle.

This Week's Resources

Is the Bible true? Do you have to believe in the inerrancy (factual, without error) of Scripture in order to be saved? If not, then are you essentially calling God a liar?  Here are some excellent evidence-based resources to help you in your faith journey:

* Note:  I present these resources for your own study and edification.  That said, here is what we as a ministry believe about Scripture (see our website for further): That the 66 books of the Bible (i.e. Old and New Testaments) comprise the totality of Holy Scripture, are inerrant in the original texts and is in totality the inspired, literal ("God-breathed") and infallible word of God.  As such, it is therefore the supreme and final authority in faith, theology, and life. (see 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalm 119:11, 89, 105).

Law Enforcement
Bible Study/Devotional

God's "Battle Plan" for your Life

In a recent post, Brian Stewart of Simple Message Ministries, teaching on Psalm 144:1-2, wrote,

How many times as a LEO [Law Enforcement Officer] have you heard someone say "I could never do what you do"? Chances are you have heard it a lot, and you know what; they are right.  Not just anyone can be a cop! We have all seen the ones who for one reason or another wind up in law enforcement but aren't cut out for it, and they usually don't last very long. Being a cop takes a calling, or as some would say, it takes a person who is "a few fries short of a happy meal". Who else but a cop rushes toward shots being fired, or confronts a dangerous felon on a dark highway, or searches a building for a hiding burglar. Those are things we readily do at a moment's notice because it's our responsibility as LEOs. So why does it seem to come natural for us, but terrifies others?

The answer to that question is found in today's text. Notice what David said: "Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight". When others looked at David they saw a shepherd boy, but God had prepared him for much more, and had given him the abilities he needed to do battle. When God calls someone to a task, He also enables them to do it with the gifts and abilities necessary. If God has called you to be a LEO, then He will also equip you for battle. This doesn't mean that we automatically have all the tactics and training we need, but instead God clearly puts a will within us to be a LEO.

It's also important that we notice from these verses, that David acknowledged that his abilities came from God, "which teacheth my hands...". Jesus said in John 15:5 that "without Me, ye can do nothing"; any ability we have ultimately comes from God. Next, not only did he acknowledge where his abilities came from, but he also placed his confidence in God. Man tends to be prideful, and if we are not careful we can become self sufficient and forget that our abilities were given to us by God. Like David, we need to be careful to remember that God is our strength, and it is He that is our shield, and without Him we can do nothing. What an incredible God Who prepares us ahead of time for the work He wants us to do!

Brian's message is a great lead-in to the one given at last week's Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry (FCPO-Denver) fellowship by retired cop and Army Major Mike Swihart who, with his bride Linda, is in the process of answering God's call to start a new traveling first responder ministry (I'll be sharing more details in the new future). Mike writes,

I want to share with you some of the highlights of the incredible journey God has put Linda and me on. Suffice it to say, there is a lot more to my two connected callings (police and the military) than shootouts and wars. Accordingly, the following is an abbreviated portion of my testimony of living out God's plan for my life.

The prophet Jeremiah was "called" by God for a specific mission, in a specific time and in a specific place. Jeremiah 1:4-5  (NIV) reveals, The Word of the LORD came to me, saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

King David also recorded God's calling and plan on his life in (among other passages) Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV): For you created my inmost being: you knit me together in my mother's womb.  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made: your works are wonderful, I know that full well.  My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.  When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.  All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

I believe God selects the time and place to drop us into history.  God's plan for me (and for you) is the best plan. God Himself says in Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

That said, God's plan for each of us requires our voluntary cooperation (meaning that we have to be willing to follow and obey). When we walk though the doors He has opened for us and ignore the ones he closes, we are living within His overall "good" plan for our lives.  On the other hand, attempting to kick open or "pick the locks" on doors God has closed is not a prudent decision, and, at a minimum, takes us away from God's best for us.  Moreover, rebellion (sin) against God and His plan is very likely to result in the loss of joy and conditional promises along with discipline and correction.

As MC so often teaches, serving in law enforcement and the military makes us God's ministers (servants) for good and a terror against evil (paraphrase of Romans 13:1-4). That said, I didn't realize that I was "officially" God's minister until probably half-way through my career.  Early on, I was too busy being a cop, firefighter, soldier, husband, and dad to spend much time digging into God's Word. Since we are His ministers, it is a very good idea for us to know what our Master wants us to do and how He wants us to do it.  God offers police officers, firefighters, medics, and soldiers unique wisdom, power, strength, protection, peace, and compassion.  What peace officer wouldn't want more of those benefits before rolling out of the parking lot at the start of watch?  Sadly, most officers work day-after-day not even knowing they are working under God's authority with His attributes available to them.  Even as a believer, I rolled into many situations where I tried doing things on my own without consciously tapping into His power and strength.  Doing that over prolonged periods can, at a minimum, increase an officer's chances for "burn out" while at the other end of the spectrum it can get you injured or killed.

Even though I was physically (and psychologically) injured and nearly killed in the three shootings I was involved in, there were also many more situations where God made me very aware of great danger and enabled me to walk away unscathed.  There were also many other times where God protected me from dangers I was completely unaware of.  Clearly, it is by God's grace, mercy, and protection that I survived to share with you today...

Mike went on to share about his deadly force incident in 1992 in which a perpetrator killed his wife at church and then shot Mike when he intervened. Though critically wounded (that he survived his horrific injuries is a miracle), God gave Mike (who was off duty but carrying his life-saving tools) the strength to stay in the fight, return fire and end the threat.

It is Mike and Linda's belief (Linda was close by when Mike was shot) that God prepared them both for that fateful day (and many other tough situations both before and after) while still giving Mike an Esther choice to walk through that "open door" and do what was necessary to save the lives of many others. Moreover, it is also clear that God's  hand was on Mike in the painful days that followed and in his career(s) as a whole.

Mike and Linda have become "regulars" at our FCPO-Denver fellowship meetings and as such they will be around to share further.  I'm also encouraging Mike to seek God's help in writing a book about his experiences.  Regardless, stay tuned for more about their developing ministry outreach.

We'll conclude with this:  Will YOU choose to stop doing things your own way and instead accept THE perfect plan God has for your life?

"How?" First (for the unbeliever),  click on the Know God? link on the upper left of this newsletter and decide TODAY to repent of your sin and enter into a life-saving/life-changing personal relationship with the greatest "cop" of all time -- Jesus Christ.  I also have additional links under the KNOW GOD (AKA TRUE "OFFICER SAFETY") section of our website that will help you in making this eternal decision.

Secondly, humbly ask God to reveal His perfect plan for your life and then follow hard after it.

Finally, get involved in a solid, Bible-teaching church (not optional for the believer) and seek out other sold-out/all-in Christians (and, for our fellow sheepdogs, other Christian cops and military personnel in particular) who will come alongside you to help you grow and stay on course in your faith (AKA discipleship).

Questions? Always feel free to drop us an email -- we're here to serve you.
