Fabulous Fabric Panels

Pastiche

Now this is upscale! A fabulous designer quality tee shirt in just a few easy steps. The fabric was printed at a French mill to be manufactured into high-end tee shirts. As you can see in the full view, the motif is centered in half of the width. The remaining solid can be used for the back and sleeves.

The lush bouquet of flowers in cornflower blue, coral pink, tangerine and white is centered on the 31 inch length. Scattered in contrast tohe floral are small squares of white metallic.  The counterpoint kicks this design up a notch from a standard floral.  Digital printing gives it fine detail and depth of color.

Empire
If dramatic is the look you are going for, this fabulous printed panel from France will do the trick. We were awestruck when we saw it and knew many of our customers would be challenged by this offering. To make the best of the design, we suggest using it full length, whether for a belted tunic or a short dress. The NYC skyline is slightly smudged as it is rendered against a turquoise, magenta and burnt orange sky. The photographic quality of the foreground is accented with abstract renderings of crowds and city trees. Digitally printed for exquisite detail.Viscose/elastane. 60 in
St Tropez
cotton blend jacquard

We were so taken with this jacquard in bold summery colors.

We can envision a stylish jacket teamed with white pants and brightly colored accessories. Ah, summer! Sun-drenched yellows blend with hot pink, accented with white yarns. The novelty weave adds texture and interest to the fabrication. This fine weave with an upscale pattern has a truly Euro feel and will set your garment apart from the run of the mill. Cotton/Poly.

Buttercup
cotton pique

Bold and happy, this bright yellow cotton pique is perfect for little summer jackets, sundresses, tops or short skirts. Cotton/spandex. 55 in
Tahiti
viscose knit
double border print

Black and white animal print makes up the center stage of this rayon jersey kit. BUT the flower-box borders are the lead actors. South Sea florals in cherry red, fuchsia, and golden yellow are surrounded by foliage in olive, leaf green and lime. Great for tops, skirts or dresses. For inspiration see our Pinterest Board

Sew 'n Tell
with Jan Bickford
A Special Treat at the
Sewing Retreat

Recently our Judy attended a weekend sewing retreat with her Boston ASG group. There she met up with Jan Bickford, a friend and contributor to SB and local sewing instructor.

Here's what Jan brought for Sew and Tell!

Jan was inspired by RTW to create her jacket

We had just seen Jan recently at the SB warehouse, where she picked up some yardage of Duster Denim.

Front and back of Duster Denim

She was inspired by a RTW jacket she had admired in a catalog.

For the pattern Jan modified Kwik Sew 3828  and decided to go with the reverse side of the Duster Denim. Most of the buttons she used came from our Distinctive Buttons collections.

Jan skillfully used bias tape to create a Hong Kong finish on the seams.

Jeans Junket Sew Along
with Mary Jo
and insights from Jennifer Stern

Mary Jo is leading us in making jeans using Jennifer Stern's jeans pattern and Jennifer will sew along too!

This week from Maryjo:
As you are working on your muslin for fitting, start thinking about the topstitching choices you will be making. Look carefully at some of your favorite jeans. Look in your closet, at stores, online...other friend's jeans.
Decide what you like...whether it is subtle, matching topstitching...or....a complementary colored thread to match your pocket lining fabric...
Do you desire more than one color in your topstitching? It is recommended to use the YLI Jeanstitch thread for topstitching. So, you can also be looking to find it. You will also need a topstitch needle (110/16 or 90/14) to accommodate the weight of the Jeanstitch thread. For sewing your denim, be sure to buy a jeans needle (110/16 or 90/14) that is appropriate for the weight of denim you are using.

Here are some samples of topstitching that I did to help me with my final decision.

The front and sleeves were embellished beautifully with multiple colors and sizes of twill tape. She finished the look with assorted buttons.

Jan used Meander, Rivers, and Ventana buttons

Creative Kudos to you, Jan!

We like yours best!
