Greetings from Midland!

The Midland School Board of Trustees recently convened their annual winter Board meeting on February 8th.

The Board members are past parents, alumni/ae, community members, and career independent school administrators with professional expertise and passion for Midland. They volunteer their time in order to help manage Midland's resources and govern the school in accordance with the School's Mission and Philosophy and current Strategic Plan.

Everything we do at Midland matters, and every student, parent, staff member, alumnus, alumna, and friend of the school matters. The ninth graders in the dish house and the Board members who travel to campus from St. Louis, Portland, or New York all have jobs to do. We all are stewards of this place. Each of us is wanted and needed to sustain the school and to ensure that Midland thrives for years to come.

Students will begin their departures for February break Friday, February 14th after 6:00PM. Marguerite and I look forward to seeing a number of you in San Francisco on Saturday night, February 15th

Sincerely,

Rubel Castle was established in Glendora,California, by Midlander Michael Clarke Rubel '58. Michael attended Midland in the mid-1950s and attributed a significant part of his personal development to the School.

His nephew, Scott Rubel '75 has succeeded in getting Rubel Castle designated as a
National Historic Landmark.

"Rubel Castle has quite a bit of Midland in it."
- Scott Rubel '75

In 2003 a book on Rubel Castle was published entitled   One Man's Dream.  It relates the tale of a magical castle built in the midst of an elegant residential neighborhood of Glendora, California. It was created by a man who had the same dream as William Randolph Hearst, but lacked the resources to accomplish it. This was the work of Michael Rubel and his band of volunteers called, "The Pharm Hands."  Rubel Castle was arguably the first major recycling project in the United States.

Thanks to the generous support of Milt Frye '62 the Midland Farm and Garden has a new farm building to store produce, seeds, and farm tools safe from the elements, with a large porch to accommodate classes and groups.  This generous gift testifies to the prominence the Garden has achieved in Midland's curriculum and operations and will help integrate farm and school into the future.

Course Descrption:

The topic of water use in California has always been, and always will be, controversial. Historically, agriculture has used 80% of available water supplies, but within the last few decades the West's population boom and rising concerns for environmental preservation have challenged the traditional approach for allocating and dividing up water resources. This course will focus on local and regional water issues as they apply to demands from the environmental, agricultural, domestic, and industrial sectors. Understanding the state's intricate plumbing system - the Central Valley Project, the State Water Project, the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the Colorado River Aqueduct, and thousands of miles of canals and ditches - is crucial to comprehending the big picture of water use in California.
