Franco-American Relations
Franco-American relations have frequently been studded with misunderstandings, suffocating aggravations, and at worst, downright incomprehension. Dr. Stokle will attempt to illuminate this murky domain by identifying certain essential notions and attitudes common to all French people. He will explore such issues as: the French perception of self and of others, their attitude towards their own history and government, their system of priorities and values, their strategies for self-protection and overcoming obstacles. He will analyze the most flagrant differences between French and American behavior patterns and assess what the future may hold for this important yet fragile relationship in a rapidly changing world.

About Norman StokleBorn and raised in County Durham, England, Norman Stokle has spent most of his life teaching French language, civilization and literature at universities across the United States, as well as in Paris, France and Zaria, Nigeria. He received his Ph.D from Syracuse University, studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and musical composition at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. He has appeared in numerous television plays and movies and, for many years, performed with Dear Conjunction, the English theater group, based in Paris. His most recent publications include Plays for the Sinful, Three French Comedies (Joffo, Salacrou, Feydeau), Beauty, the Beast and Some Clowns (a musical fantasy), a co-authored satirical novel, Cheeseburgers in the Rose Room and several screenplays, most notably The Siege of Saint Michel and The Florentines (a TV miniseries). Currently, he lives in Fresno, California where he spends much time playing Petanque and promoting French language and culture. He can be reached by email at: [email protected].

Fresno Art Museum Field Trip: Art Excursions
 As part of our collaborations FAM invites members of L'Alliance Francaise de Fresno to enjoy the De Young and Legion of Honor Museums in San Francisco to see four exciting exhibitions in two fantastic museums, followed by a dinner stop at Santana Row in San Jose. members rate and to leave the driving and planning to them! Join FAM for our next Bus Excursion on Saturday April 26, 2014! Exhibitions include: - Intimate Impressionism from the National Gallery
- Matisse from SF MOMA
- Matisse and the Artist Book
- Modern Nature: Georgia O'Keeffe and Lake George
Bus will depart from the VA Hospital (Clinton and First) in Fresno, at 6:45 am, returning by 11:00 pm. Bus Excursion: $160 members / $175 non-members which includes round trip bus, a breakfast snack, entrance to DeYoung and Legion of Honor Museums (including special ticketed exhibitions), and a dinner stop (on your own) at Santana Row in San Jose.

Fresno Filmworks and L'Alliance Francaise de Fresno present the bittersweet romantic comedy "Le Week-End"
 Sunday, April 27, 7:30 p.m. -at the historic Tower Theatre, on closing night of the 3-day 2014 Fresno Film Festival.
The film stars Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan as a long-married British couple who re-visit the magic of Paris for the first time since their honeymoon 30 years prior, in an attempt to rekindle their fading relationship.
The movie will be accompanied by the short film "Valse," which depicts an ill-fated romantic encounter between two snails. ("Une rencontre amoureuse entre deux escargots, qui est condamn�e d�s le d�part.)
The full lineup for the festival, which runs from April 25-27, will be available soon.

The Requiem of French composer Gabriel Faur� was first performed in 1888, though he continued to revise and expand the work until its final completion in 1901. Considered a master of the French m�lodie (art of song), Faur� created this work of mostly gentle tone during his time as choirmaster and deputy for the principal organist Camille Saint-Sa�ns at the �glise de la Madeleine in Paris. Also on the concert program is the shimmering Lux Aeterna by American composer Morten Lauridsen.
Please join us for these two beloved and memorable choral works.

Lest We Forget
June 6, 2014 marks the 70th Anniversary of the landing of Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy, France which changed World War II and the world forever. Do any of our members have stories of this pivotal time in our two nations' pasts to share?
 "The man on our left and wearing a hat was my father, Malcolm Hord who served for our Army Air Corps at the Podington Airfield, England. The man on our right was one of my father's brothers, Patrick Hord. He served in the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper. On D-Day his unit was dropped behind enemy lines. The wind blew them into a Nazi stronghold. Uncle Pat was one of the few that fought his way out and survived the combat."
