Don't Wait One More Minute...

...to sign up for "Safe & Sound: Smart Strategies to Protect Children from Gun Violence."  You know this is the most ambitious project Women's Voices has ever undertaken. You know we have a distinguished keynote speaker coming from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.  You know you will hear compelling stories from family members who have lost children to gun violence.  You know that a panel of professionals will share expert advice.  And you know that there must be more than one way to approach the epidemic of gun violence that continues to sweep our country.

This forum will look at gun violence from the perspective of public health (one way we might actually be able to do something about it).

Don't wait.  More than 150 people have already signed up.  Click HERE and get your name on the list NOW.

Safe & Sound: Smart Strategies to
Protect Children from Gun Violence

Wednesday, April 9
JC Penney Conference Center
(University of Missouri, St. Louis )

8:00-8:30am:
Registration & Continental Breakfast

8:30am to noon:
Forum

Listen!

Two of our expert panelists at the forum on gun violence will be featured on St. Louis On The Air (KWMU, 90.7FM) on Thursday, April 3, from 12:00-1:00 pm.  Host Don Marsh will be questioning Dr. David Jaffe, a pediatrician from Children's Hospital, and Dr. Saaid Khojasteh, a child psychiatrist with the SSM Health System, about how gun violence affects children in the St. Louis area and things parents and others can do to protect kids.

Why Do We Run?

No, this is not about being in a marathon!

At our upcoming Annual Meeting on May 8, we will hear from two former Missouri state politicians who will tell us why they chose to run for public office and how being in the legislature changed their lives.  They will also advise us on how to become better advocates for the issues we care about when we approach our legislators.

And during our business meeting at which we will elect our board members and approve our budget, Mary Clemons will report on what she learned during her 3 years as president of Women's Voices.  Come hear why being on the board of Women's Voices Raised for Social Justice can make a positive impact on your life!

And, yes: we will have wine and appetizers and good fellowship.

Time:  6:30  pm
Place:  Central Reform Congregation, 5020 Waterman Blvd., 63108

If You Run on Automatic...

Don't come to the Ethical Society on the second Thursday of April.  Our April program will be during the morning on Wednesday, April 9, when we sponsor the "Safe & Sound" forum at the JC Penney Conference Center at UMSL.

And don't come to the Ethical Society on the second Thursday of May, either.  That will be our annual meeting, when we'll gather at Central Reform Congregation on Waterman Blvd. in St. Louis to elect a new slate of officers, listen to two former Missouri legislators talk about why they ran for office, and, of course, enjoy wine, appetizers, and good friends and fellowship!

Support for Women's Voices and Our Work

What do Kelvin R. Adams, superintendent of the St. Louis public schools, and Ray Hartmann, CEO of St. Louis Magazine, have in common?  What about Thomas F. George, chancellor of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Rabbi Susan Talve of Central Reform Congregation?  Pamela Rice-Walker, director of the city Health Department, and Circuit Court Judge Jimmie Edwards?

These six people, plus a dozen more, are members of the Advisory Committee for "Safe & Sound: Smart Strategies to Protect Children from Gun Violence." They understand the devastation that gun violence can cause for individuals, families and communities.  Click HERE  to see the entire list of community leaders who are supporting our forum; then click on the "register now" button to let us know that you'll be there.

Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.

They've been meeting since November.  They have gathered in cramped meeting rooms at the University City Library and in countless coffee shops.  They have emailed, phoned, faxed and text-messaged.  They have run errands and done research.  They have worked on budgets and strategies and publicity and programs.  And, as you read this, they are still working.  They are members of the planning committee for "Safe & Sound: Smart Strategies to Protect Children from Gun Violence."  Our thanks go to all these women and especially to Carol Wofsey, competent chair of this hard-working group:

Lise Bernstein, Mary Clemons, Carolyn Crowe, Barbara Finch, Linda Wallace-Jones,  Roxanne Miller, Barbara Richter, and Susan Talley.

Other hard-working committee members and the groups they represent are:

Jennifer Bernstein, National Council of Jewish Women-St. Louis Section; Dixie Buford, Moms Demand Action; Ruth Ehresman, Vision for Children at Risk; Farilyn Hale, Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence; and Amy Hunter, YWCA of Metro St. Louis.

A Word About Money

We don't talk much about money in Women's Voices.  Our dues are low (some say "ridiculously low") because we want to be an affordable organization for all women.  Our four founders prided themselves on "not being fund-raisers."

But after eight years of education and advocacy, we began to realize that money talks, and that we need to be willing to raise money if we want our voices to be heard.  And, we knew that it takes money to put on a first-class event.

So, we took a deep breath and asked for what we needed.  Which is the long way around to saying THANK YOU to three St. Louis organizations that have made it possible for us to present our "Safe & Sound" forum:

Thank you to the Deaconess Foundation and its executive director, the Rev. Starsky Wilson; thank you to the Incarnate Word Foundation and its executive director, Bridget McDermott Flood; and thank you to the Des Lee Collaborative Vision initiative at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and to collaborator Finn Esbensen.

We are grateful for the faith you have put in Women's Voices.

Standing on the Corner - Blowin' in the Wind

The United States Postal Service creed is "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."  The dedicated social activists can add "nor wind" to the list of weather events that won't stop us from demonstrating support for Medicaid expansion in Missouri.

The wind blew while members of Women's Voices and allies from our partner organizations held tight to signs and banners in Festus, Frontenac, and Kirkwood.  Motorists honked their approval as they drove by during rush hour on Tuesday, March 18.

How Plans Can Go Awry

At our February meeting, we honored Women's Voices founder Ruth Ann Cioci, who is moving to Minneapolis with her husband Pat.  A week later, Ruth Ann and Pat were in a serious car accident, hit by another car on very busy I-270.

Pat was unhurt, but Ruth Ann's injuries (including broken ribs, femur, and clavicle) required major surgery and an exhausting, but productive three weeks in rehab. Now known as the bionic woman, she and Pat made the trip north exactly four weeks after the accident, where they are gently settling into their new home. Her new address is:

3701 Bryant Ave. South, Apt. 318, Minneapolis, MN  55409

Kudos... to Women Who Write!

... to member Suzanne Hagan for her letter to the editor published in the Post-Dispatch on March 8 about the obscene profits of Centene Corporation.

... to member Barbara Paulus for her letter to the editor published in the Post-Dispatch on March 10 about voter ID.

... to member Kay Boyd for her letter to the editor published in the Post-Dispatch on March 14 calling the media to task for their reporting on the Kirkwood City Council race - the coverage focused on candidate Jayson Thornton's relationship to Cookie Thornton (who killed six people in 2008) rather than on his qualifications for office.

... to member Bunnie Gronborg for her letter published in the Jefferson County Leader this month in support of the Leader's  purchase of affordable insurance for their staff using the health exchange.

... and to Women Who Inspire Us!

The woman who inspired us to work for health care for all has been named one of America's most inspiring rabbis!  Kudos to Rabbi Susan Talve of Central Reform Congregation, who is one of 28 rabbis in America to receive this honor from The Jewish Daily Forward.

And Congratulations...

... to member Marilyn Ratkin who received the Visionary Leadership Award from the National Council of Jewish Women.  The award recognized Marilyn's work with the Healing Hearts Bank, a microloan program that helps victims of domestic violence, a program we learned about at our March 13th meeting.

BRAVO to all who raised their voices this month!

From Abuse to Independence

ANGER IS AN ASSET, SPEAKER SAYS...

"Why are you angry?"

This question was posed by Michelle Schiller-Baker at the March meeting of Women's Voices.  Schiller-Baker, executive director of St. Martha's Hall, said that anger makes us present to what is going on in the world, and can serve as a call to action.  It should make us angry that one of every three women in the United States has experienced stalking, rape, or violence by someone who says they love her.
