Rotunda Gallery exhibit examines liquid and solid states

Rick Nixon's unforms is featured in the Rotunda Gallery for the month of March. Nixon, a Waterloo artist, strives to animate lifeless templates so viewers can construct their own thoughts about art-making.

He does this by taking basic elements of painting - specifically the drip, the puddle, and the support - and making variations of drips and blobs. These are epoxied and handled in a way that heightens their non-liquid state. His pieces stand in sharp contrast to their form, introducing new ideas about the barriers between symbols and objects.

"Everything I make is meant to be cast at some point in its history. I like the way that molds are inhabited by liquids and other substances before they become solid," says Nixon. "It is easy to recognize something but it takes a lot of focus to know it."

Meet Rick Nixon on March 27 from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery.
