"Can't Miss" Event of the Month: Rep. Donna Edwards on Women Making a Difference in Congress

Senator Wynona Lipman, the first African American woman in the NJ Senate, was a leader on policies affecting women, children and families. Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) certainly follows in her footsteps as a woman blazing her own path in the US House of Representatives. Edwards, the first African American woman to represent Maryland in Congress, will give this year's Senator Wynona Lipman Lecture in Women's Political Leadership on Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00 pm in the Douglass Campus Center.

Edwards co-founded and served as the first executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence and worked to pass the 1994 Violence Against Women Act. In 2009, Edwards was arrested along with five other US Congressmembers outside the Sudan embassy during a protest against genocide in Darfur. She was also one of only six African American women in her class at Wake Forest University. She worked for Lockheed Corporation at the Goddard Space Flight Center with the Spacelab program and also received a J.D.

See what we mean?  You can't miss it! The event is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required

The Senator Wynona Lipman Chair in Women's Political Leadership is made possible by the generous support of the New Jersey Legislature.

CAWP has all the answers!

Have you been following Melissa Harris-Perry's Nerdland Scholar Challenge: The Mother of All Politics?  With a focus on women in politics, the series has been full of interesting info and challenging questions. Here's a quiz that was part of the series - and, not surprisingly, the answers come from CAWP's data!

A World of Women

CAWP's interns and two dozen other Rutgers undergraduate and graduate students were among the crowd at Lincoln Center's Koch Theater to hear an amazing array of women leaders from around the world - from teen poets to heads of state to global activists - at the Women in the World Summit April 3-5. Our thanks to Women in the World for making it possible for our students to see so many of their heroines and discover new ones!

Madame Mayor?

The Washington Post's Nia-Malika Henderson is on the women-in-politics beat, offering lots of interesting angles. Here's her latest - an analysis of how gender plays in Councilwoman Muriel Bowser's bid to become mayor of Washington, DC.

She'll Leave When She's Good and Ready

The Atlantic tells us that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has no plans to retire and remains a vocal and engaged member of the Supreme Court.

The Gender Gap is NOT About Women Voting for Women

The Daily Beast asked experts - including CAWP's Professor Susan Carroll - about connections between women as candidates and women as voters. Here's what they learned.
