CITY HALL AT MYON COMPLEX
TO REOPEN IN FALL

By FRANK SAYLES JR.
Tifton Grapevine

The city of Tifton's $2.2 million renovation of the historic Myon complex on Main Street is "going on quite well," says City Manager Larry Riner, and is "still on schedule."

At a recent meeting of Tifton City Council, Riner said, "We're looking at a September-October time frame for them (contractors) to complete their work and then, maybe shortly after that, we can start moving back into the Myon. We look forward to that."

The city moved out of the Myon building during the spring of 2011 when it was told that the city hall offices there were structurally unsound and were unsafe both for employees and for the public. City Hall was then relocated to its current site, the former fire hall on North Ridge Avenue. That building is expected to be sold once city hall offices return to the Myon, Riner has said.

Initial estimates for the Myon repairs were $4 million to more than $5 million. Other opinions and bids were sought. Last summer, City Council awarded the $2.2 million bid to Anderson Construction of Fort Gaines.

An old postcard image of the Hotel Myon.
The building is being made level and its foundation is being shored up.
Originally the Myon Hotel, it was built by I.W. Myers in 1906 atop the ruins of the Hotel Sadie, which was first at the site and was destroyed by fire in 1905

City Hall first moved into the Myon during the summer of 1987 following a two-year public-private renovation partnership. The city had joined with local developer Harold Harper to turn the once-proud but decrepit Myon building into city offices, private businesses and apartments.

The city owns approximately 18,000 square feet of the building; in recent years, its portion had begun sinking and causing the structure to shift. The privately owned part of the building sits on a concrete foundation.
TIFTON COTTON MILL
EXHIBIT BRINGS FAMILY REUNION

The Georgia Museum of Agriculture in Tifton hosts a preview at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, of its first traveling exhibit featuring the story of the Catherine Young family, who worked at the Tifton Cotton Mill 105 years ago.

Joe Manning, the Massachusetts historian who tracked down the Youngs' story and reunited the family, will speak about his research; Dianne Wilcox, chair of the Humanities Division at Georgia Military College, will host an oral history workshop.

More than 40 descendants of the Young family from 11 states have been invited to participate, with many of them meeting for the first time.

Members of the Young family were part of Lewis Hine's photographs documenting the conditions of the working class in 1909 at the H.H. Tift Cotton Mill in Tifton.

One of those photos caught Manning's

Manning

attention. Through years of research, he identified the woman in the photos as Catherine Young, widow of a sharecropper who came to Tifton to live in the mill village and work in the mill with nine of her 11 children.

"The plight and the outcome of Catherine Young and her children are compelling," Manning said. "The descendants, mostly because of seven of the children going to the orphanage, had very little knowledge of what happened to the family until I took an interest in the Hine photos, which they had never seen."

Admission to the event is free, but registration is required: (229) 391-5222 or [email protected]

Mount will be in attendance as Tom Kohler, executive director of Chatham-Savannah Citizen Advocacy, tells Welcome's story Sunday. The quilt depicts Welcome and his friend, Addie Reeves, surrounded by 16 squares symbolizing the Savannah squares and garden spaces.
