Presentation to the Governor Neil Abercrombie

for the President's Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience

On April 4, leaders from business, government, and civic groups will join together with talented Hawaii youth to see how we might design a sustainable future for Hawaii.  We'd like to give you an insider's look into an exciting new strategy incorporating Design Thinking with Sustainability to build a green workforce.  At the Design Sustainable Hawaii Forum teams of youth and adults (educators/'ohana) will apply DT tools to solve a real-world problem, a sustainable Hawaii.  We will honor Hawaiian culture, 'aina and kuleana. We will build bridges between decision-makers and action-oriented youth; seasoned wisdom with youthful curiosity.  We will open minds, doors and resources to harness the power of youth, capture their imagination andfast track innovative sustainability projects.

There is a natural synergy between Design Thinking Hawaii and Sustainable Hawaii Youth Leadership Initiative. SHYLI embodies the principles of Design Thinking.  SHYLI youth possess the "beginner's mind" and "out-of-the-box" thinking that DT teaches adults.  They exude the empathy and most importantly, they are taking the initiative to envision projects and engage people.  The Design Sustainable Hawaii Forum could be a differentiator and catalyst.
