There is a sea change happening in digital education in Milton Public Schools. Thanks to your unprecedented support at last year's Celebration for Education, we were able to place 400 electronic devices across all six Milton Public Schools.
As part of a pilot initiative, iPads, Google Chromebooks, Kindle Fires and Apple TVs are being used by students Kindergarten through 12th grade to research, collaborate and investigate. Our students are learning valuable digital skills while enhancing their education. Teachers are able to encourage student's working together, give more personalized feedback, and reach out to resources around the world to enrich their classrooms.
Our youngest scholars are keyboarding, cutting and pasting images, and learning valuable 21st century digital skills. Grades 3, 4 and 5 are using Chromebooks for research, note taking and synthesizing information. Middle schoolers and high schoolers are accessing online programs like Animoto, Edmoto, Google Drive and Scratch. Across the district students are learning, creating and presenting in ways that were previously impossible. And it's all part of an ongoing evolution. As we see how students are best learning from this first round of purchases, we'll build on what's working at each grade level to decide which emerging technologies and approaches are the most beneficial moving forward.
This year's Celebration for Education, Power Up, will raise even more money to further this important endeavor. Again, we offer a hearty thanks. None of this would be possible without your generous support.

We are thrilled to share some very exciting news on the science front. Milton Public Schools and the MFE are partnering with the non-profit Science from Scientists, an organization that sends real scientists into classrooms to inspire and motivate students to embrace Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
The Cunningham and Collicot fifth grade classes will be working with Science from Scientists as a pilot for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year. Our hopes are to expand the program into all four elementary schools in the fall of 2014.
Through this partnership, fifth grade teachers work closely with a Science from Scientists instructor/scientist to create enhanced lessons that align with our curriculum. These scientists are passionate about teaching, have undergraduate degrees in STEM, and have received or are working towards pursuing advanced degrees in STEM or education.

So far this program has been an intergalactic hit. The scientists are very engaging and the lessons are hands-on and fun.
Every other week the scientist comes in to teach a 45-minute lesson with the classroom teacher on-hand to co-teach. On the days to follow, the classroom teacher continues to teach the concept with materials provided by the district. Parents are given online access to the lessons, photos and even at-home versions of the experiments. The kids are engaged, energized and filled with questions for which they are encouraged to find answers. And through co-teaching with a science expert on an on-going basis, our teachers further benefit from this partnership by earning valuable Professional Development Points (PDPs).
This work is possible because of the generous support of the Milton community. This initial pilot will be funded with money raised through Celebration for Education; the Monster Dash held in loving memory of Sam Cichello; and money donated in memory of Dr. Ann Coghlan, President Emeritus of the MFE, a lifelong Milton resident, Dean of Sciences at Simmons College and a huge supporter of science education for all.

Teacher Grants have been awarded. Once again, the kids come out on top.
Every fall and spring teachers across the district request funding for valuable resources that fall outside the normal school budget. We're so happy when we can offer funding for these tools which enrich our classrooms. This fall, elementary schools were awarded hands-on science kits and leveled reading collections. Pierce received document cameras and a new fitness program. The high school was able to buy high interest books for their library and more. This is just the beginning of what we were able to offer our schools thanks to your support through our Annual Fund Appeal. Check out the full list of the 2013 Fall Funded Grants.

Thus far, our 2013-14 Annual Appeal has raised $21,000 to support our Competitive Teacher Grant Program. These funds will go directly to supporting creativity in our classrooms through these grants! Click here to thank our donors.
